lev and his computer illiteracy

Post by Levangles »

soooo..... as most already know i know just about nil in regards to working computers. that means it's question time! i'll describe the situation first:
i'm lazy (i dont want to leave my house). i'm also cheap (i'm working on very limited funds here). i have two computers, and on one i have 2 network ports (ethernet or whatever) and on the other i merely have one. is it possible for me to run my internet connection into my comp with 2 ports, and then out the other port to computer number 2? if it is possible and it's beyond my comprehension (that means i have to do something in dept and computer-logic necessary) then thanks, but i'll go out and by a hub. but i dont really feel like driving all the way to the store in the friggen snow and wasting 20 bones on some dinky computer thingy.
so..... if anyone can lend me their two cents, or possibly words of wisdon it would be greatly appreciated.
merci

I think the one with the 2 ports is a 56K modem but I am not 100% sure.

I too could be wrong but you can cascade them if they are indeed RJ-45 plugs (really big phone jacks) however - I assume your main is the one with 2 network cards - now your main comp is trying to handle the load of 3 connections and that will reduce throughput and performance - the $20 you spend on a 10/100 hub at any place (get as cheap as you want for a hub just make sure it says 10/100) will be worth it. then take out one of the adapters and store it and now you have an empty slot for something else that you can get on e-bay and have ups'd to your doorstep :-)

k thx.... think i'm gonna get the hub
both of the network things are onboard, so i can't really free up any space by getting rid of them

For just 2 computers I would save my money and buy a switch later.

Simply enable Internet connection sharing on your Internet facing network adapter, and that will make your other network adapter 192.168.0/24. Then just turn on your second computer get an IP from ICS. (assuming your second computer has DHCP discovery on -- it is by default).

Oh, and by the way. Make sure your using crossover cables going from 1 PC to another PC.

That will do it.

yes router or switch is better than hub but more $ - and xor remembered the most important thing about using cables and no hardware the crossover cable - this is a cable pined out backwards on one side - not an ordinary patch cord
