Yeah thats the same reason why Asheron's Call must be the most popular because it was rated #1 for about 6-7 months straight right? And why other games have 20 times the population of the two mentioned games but yet are not on the top charts. It just means that a lot of EVE players actually visit the site.
Sure I can agree with your statement about the game changing, but trying to base how good a game is off mmorpg.com's standings is a little far-fetched

Quite frankly Lineage, FF XI, and Lineage 2 kill all games even mentioned on mmorpg in playerbase. Although EQ2 is rated #1 there at the moment, so maybe your logic isn't that scewed lol
Although the true test of time for EVE will be this year and looking at the playerbase say mid-year. I mean even if you look at the comments the site you pointed to it doesn't look very good. The people rate it as an 8+ but also on the first page even you see comments such as:
Has a game life of about 2-3 months, before long you will be mining/fighting gets very repetative. For the game to hold your interest any longer than that you would have to find a awesome corp to make up for the repetative content.
Very fun game, only lasts about 3 months though
Its an ok game but It Gets REALLY boring, I played it for a while I thought it was a waste of money
EvE is pretty, but eventually dull... the biggest challenge I had was mastering the initially bewildering interface. Everything after that was just plain slow. EvE plays at glacial pace - mining, combat and especially travelling seem designed to be a time sink. I played for a couple of months, and have heard people say it gets better, but after recently reactivating my account and talking to the remnants of my guild, it seems people are hanging on because either they have no place better to go, or have too much time invested already and are hoping things will get better.
Those are the people rating it up high

So if the game can hold it's playerbase another 6-12 months, I will be very impressed and hold my tongue. The only reason I say that is mainly due to the inability to bring in new players at a certain point, I mean they got dead lucky that E&B closed down along with others and that swelled the population. If they can't keep the rising playerbase curve they will eventually go the way of E&B because it's getting the noobs that counts! Now I am not saying that they will stop attracting new players at all, hell I don't know the future. It's just that if you look at the past history of space MMOs, they all shut down for that very reason.
I have no sig.
