Hah, the apocalypse is the device of religous brutes, extremists and stargazers.
What most don't, or don't want to conceive is that each and every biblical or sacred version of the Apocalypse/Armageddon/Genesis2/Gehenna will only apply to a portion of the population, and there will be survivors who will then have denounced that theology as a falsity (or defend it by saying "that was just a prelude, the real thing will come soon to take the rest of us!" or "I didn't die because I'm a chosen one!").
I'd still say the apocalypse soonest to arrive is that of political stagnation, order through deception and manipulation is unfurled for all to see, resulting in all powerful governments losing their grip on their own lands and then trying drastic means of attacking each other with their greatest weaponry. Assuming it'll be recent... like the next few decades, I surmise it shall be something like
"The End of the World", except there will be quite a lot more survivors.
Then all that will be left are a bunch of vagabonds looking for edible food and water, while a bunch of abnormally muscular guys punch the crap out of each other. Wait... That's
Hokuto no Ken, oh well, something like that. Along with the many instantly dead and the many unable to survive, there will be a few utopias that will propogate and rise back to the same level of power and technology, back at each others' throats and the same thing will happen all over again.
Unless of course humanity finally stops backstabbing each other long enough to go into space and land somewhere else, then corporate kingdoms will grow indefinetly.
Humanity never learns. Even when they keep what stupid stuff they did before in arms reach!
*Goes back to playing Brothers In Arms*
