Savage Free MP

A slightly aged, but well-tuned game that mixes shooter style gameplay with overhead build and attack strategy was before questionably "free" as "Savage: Battle for Newerth" was declared no longer supported. Now it has officially been given out for free download.

Similar to the original Warcraft games, the opposing factions, Human and Beast, vary from each other slightly. The humans start with bows and arrows, and quickly can build up to long range lasers and propellant weaponry. The Beasts are more direct, with biological attacks and a feral lunge melee attack and advancing to greater variations of wide-effect chemical and fragmentation weaponry.

The soldiers, those that play in FPS mode, are basically the footmen, but also have the ability to mine for resources and build structures (all by using the melee attack on the objects). The soldiers can select one out of approximately fifteen weapons on their side and several upgrades. The weapons cost money that the soldiers themselves earn by killing enemy players or NPC creatures. Soldiers also grow stronger in the same way Heroes do in several more recent RTS games like WarcraftIII or Battle for MiddleEarth.

The commander applies and has the overhead interface, with the ability to place structures to be built, researching weapons and upgrades, and selecting and ordering units. There are NPC peons that can be made to follow the build and resource gathering orders of the commander if the player soldiers are busy fighting; the peons cannot fight.

The game is smooth, pretty and free. Community's gotten a bit small over the years, but there are still dozens of full servers, and the upload of this on many file-hosting sites two days ago will likely bring in hundreds more.

Free? Awesome, I loved this game! I remember playing the multiplayer demo over and over. Although I won't have internet until next Sunday, I definetly plan on playing this.

Fun, albeit repetitive. On one server for about 5 games. Each one the beasts started to beat us after about 5-10 minutes into game. Then out commander ditched us and we lost each time. Would be lots of fun with a competent team.

Also from what I've heard the original tribes is available for free download now too. Man I remember playing that game for hours on end. There has apparently been a graphics update as well.

Tribes and Tribes 2 have been free for years now.
Although Vivendi is being a dick about Tribes 2 and has stopped giving out keys.

i have played this game today, I am not really sure I knew what I was doing. it was a sad day for me, I took my brother to the airport, he is going to tampa FL to USMC command and in a few days he flys out to Baghdad. now that is bad enough but what stung was when the ticket lady at the airport asked if I was my brothers Dad!!! well he is only 2 years younger than my 36 years. his dad indeed! I will hear that from him for a long time.

Neo, I had the body armor on, that is some heavy stuff, giant ceramic plates (not to mention I had to carry the damned luggage to and from the airport, lazy Marine) not sure if I have xfire, what is it?

Not sure if you have it, what is it.... Then ya probably don't have it bro. Its gameing program that tells other people on your list or your friends list what you are playing, if anything. Think of it as a status program. Also allows you to just jump right into a game that your friends are playing if you own it. Can be set to automatically download skins and partches, genre specific demos, and many other helpful things. You can get it at xfire.com. And yeah, sappy plates are not the lightest things in the world, but they are damn reliable. What is his MOS? Is he a grunt or just an IRR marine that was recalled?
