Post by z3r07w0 »

I had to reformat yesturday and nothing will work until i get xp service pack 2. Windows updater cannot load 1 of the security features so it wont move on into sp2. I'm having trouble locating it on the net. If someone could post a link i would be very greatful.

New issue. I used windows update to get everything caught up. Once i reach sp2 half way through the install ill get an error. It states that the file it has to copy isnt the right one. So i'm suppose to browse and find the right file and if i can't the error says that i should use the windows xp service pack 2 files and point out a drive to search in. If i cancel i have to do a system recovery. This is my 3rd system recovery. LOL. I read the fixes but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

you can extract the files in the Windows XP Service Pack 2 to a local directory. Then when you get that error, you can browse to that location.

I believe the command line is (whatever.msi) /x c:\(directory name)

this is the message im getting:

Setup cannot copy the file telnet.exe

Ensure the the location specified below is correct, or change it and insert 'Windows XP Service Pack 2 Source Files' in the drive you specify.

So i select to copy the files from the temporary dir. that i created and it still says that its a copy error. I just don't get it.

Try looking in C:\Windows\System32 or your original installation media's I386 directory.

I say start over and format again. I ran into a problem like this a few months back and spent 6hrs on the phone with Microsoft Tech trying to extract files like Arch is saying to do and just could not get it work. Finally they told me to format the drive again and it worked. The real kicker is that after 3 hrs on the phone with them I asked them if I should should just start over and they told me NO, we can help you.

So i figured out the reason i was getting an error was because i had my secondary harddrive still installed and it had programs and java scripts that required xp service pack 2. They would bind to the windows system before i could get up to sp2. I n turn, the only way for me to get a clean reformat was to disconnect the second harddrive and wait until i get up to sp2 then hook it back up. It gets scanned and everything i had is not lost. Thanks to those of you who helped and to those of you that took the time to read. I'm back in the game!
