PC questions......

Post by Aiur »

For those that keep up with PC hardware a few questions...

Problem:
My PC (W7 Hpremium 64 Bit) gets screen tearing/pixelation after about an hours use, then requires a restart after to fix. Also sometimes playing a video it will be all green and can't see it. Plus the occasional blue screen of death with a memory dump message.

I have allready tried reformatting and reloading windows serveral times no avail.

I originally thought it was my video card (Radeon HD5970) and dreaded changing it since it still among the top cards out without spending a bunch of cash. because i also get driver card stopped working errors... But think it could also be the MB causing this.

I updated the BIOS on my MB (Asus P6T) and the issue went away for about a week so I started thinking it could be the MB now or maybe RAM (12gb worth DDR3 1600). (Processor 920 I7 2.67ghz)

Is there anyway for sure to rule one out over the other as the problem child?

Anything else one would try before buying new parts?

Thought about getting a new MB z77 architecture, and processor then trying the rest of the parts with it.... be cheaper then the video card option. Since I woould like to keep my 3 monitor setup.....

This is why I like to keep older hardware. You can always pop your old hardware back in to see if its the problem. TBH the issue sounds video oriented. Tearing and pixel issues have always been card related. Do you have any kind of warranty on it? After ive checked my hardware and rule it out I work on the software. With the final choice being a reformat. You did say you tried other drivers so your already stepping in the right direction.

I must agree with Zero as that is usually exactly what i do as well.

This sounds like a possible overheating or driver issues with your vid. card.Try running with your vid. card temperature display up to see if overheating is a problem.Running 3 displays does put an extreme load on a card.If it is overheating try cleaning out the fans and running it again.

As for driver issues try updating OR rolling back to a driver version you were not having trouble with.I sometimes have problems with newer drivers and have to roll back to older one till the next driver update.

Hope it helps...

Do you have any video software/codecs or on-screen overlay software from any of the items you have added? Some times software that wants to throw video or menus on top of other items of the screen can cause that green screen issue. Even if they are not in the foreground.

I ran memtest while swappiogn in and out my ram sticks, and different modules testing them out...

Wierd thing memtets didnt find anything, but the artificing got a little better. So i tosed in my old 8800 gts and reinstalled those drivers and it was slow but ran ok....

played around with at least 9 different amd drivers once i put the 5970 back in and the issues changed with every driver lol.... I hate ati drivers.

noticed they just released a new beta amd installed it after running the ever hard to find "amd_cleanup_util_1.2.1.0". Its amd version of drive sweeper and works amazing.

the beta is working so far, no artificing/tearing running windows. updating GW2 now to see if it will play right. Black ops 2 wont even start up, but ive always had problems with thta game in windows...

fingers crossed gw2 will run.....

Thanks for all the replies.

I had pixel shredding as well when I first started playing gw2. Really bad in underground areas , I changed my drivers to the beta version, it got better then about 2 months ago updated again and for the most part its gone. Usually Pixel shredding is due to drivers however I have ran into an instance that it was my memory. I pulled a stick played, fail, replaced stick, pulled another played no fail, got it on my second stick. kinda tedious but it worked for trouble-shooting.
