Massive lag on the public server
Arch, IDO, anything you can do about the gradually worsening lag on the public server, it's now getting unplayable for many players. Anything you can do?
Time stops for no-one. Why should I?
Getting major lag spikes every half minute or so, and when I get near opponents it has to lag massively for about 10 secs, everytime I end up dead, it's getting boring, ping rockets up to around 200 at times, it's usually stable about 110. Starts happening around 8 players on server and just gets worse. Only starting to get the problem in the last 2 weeks. Checked hear, our cables working fine. General lag ain't much of a problem but the spikes are hitting hard, have a tendancy to hit,a) when i'm ambushing someone, b) right on the edges of roofs and c) right in the middle of the sniper alley on HK2, target practice anyone
Lags worse on the close combat levels

Not sure what Kmart specials you guys are playing this game on, but aside from the occasional hiccup from time to time, she plays baby butt smooth for me. I'm rarely over 65 ping even when it's a full house.
Some suggestions for all of you Packard Bell, eMachine and Tandy customers out there :
1) check out www.speedguide.net and edit your registry.
2) anyone without a GIG of RAM in today's world should be lashed 50 times at least twice.
3) Disable anti-virus software (thanks Arch) P.S. Don't recieve emails like this however...
4) If you still have lag, run network monitor in the background while you play and note the results. pathping should give clues as well (if ya not know, no asky)
5) unplug computer, heave the whole mess out your window, and watch the Simpsons.

lol Xor ... fyi I would say anything under half a gig of ram is slappable... a gig is pretty high end (though it is my preference as well).
I runn a POS 800 mhz with .5 gigs of ram and a Gforce 4 Ti 4200 128 meg graphics card and have little/no issues. Damn when they junked slot 1 technology, just have not gathered the cash to put together a good new box with all my moving expenses, cars, women, wine, toys. Soon though I will have to upgrade. I refuse to get a crap pc though so need about 2 grand at least to put it all together.

Actually, I think I might have found what is responsible.
Lately, almost every server has gotten unusual lag. There has been no reason to explain this, but the main issue to solve this problem is that (on most servers that I've tried this) the rate and snaps options were reset.
Try getting the best snaps number and rate number for the server (available by an admin.)
I tried: /snaps 50 and /rate 80000 and my ping dropped from 190 to around 100. So try that and see if it works.

--take a look around
trev is 100% correct. Experienceing lag on the quake3 engine is somewhat of a bitch. the "/rate" command in the console is a command to request more bandwidth from the server. It is default set to 5000 but a true gamer on a broadband connection would have optimal playing speeds with a rate of 30000 or 40000. Also, to get 20 more frames per second from ther server, you need to take off the FPS limiter that comes with all games built on quake3. To do this you would type: "/com_maxFPS 0". However, if you read up on the new PB update that just came out this week, they have started to check for these things. While having a higher rate decreases lag and lag spikes, you are also taking bandwidth away from the server and requsting 500 more times the frames then the poor kid that doesnt know how to change these things. If everyone on a 30 person server has a rate of 30000, even if your ping is 50, it will feel like 100. PB is looking for this for the protection of the server. Because of this, PB has started to boot players for requsting too much bandwidth from the server. The current version of PB only boots you if your rate is above 40000, but that number is dynamic and can chance anytime if the server feels it needs to send packets a certain way.
What does all this mean?
1. If you want to risk getting booted by PB to get smoother game play, type the following in the console:
"/cg_drawFPS 1" -=> This turns the frame counter on
"/com_maxFPS 0" -=> This unlocks the frame rate, allowing up to 1000FPS
"/rate 30000" -=> Requst 30000 packets per ?
2. get yourself a faster connection and get the fuck off of Morpheous, iMesh, Audio Galaxy, DC, DC++, and whatever other P2P programs you use.
