Computer cooling

Post by Tasmania »

I was just wondering if anyone out there knows much about case cooling.

As of now I have 3 fans. 1 is an exhaust, 1 is an intake, and the third is a video card cooler. they all run at 32 CFM. I have spots for 2 more fans. I have seen the thermaltake fans that adjust according to the temp of case. If I am adding 1 exhaust and 1 intake do both fans have to be the exact type for air circulation??? or could I use 1 ThermalTake II fan and a regular 32 CFM fan??

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!!

yo tas whatup.....you are prob gonna want more intake than exhuast, to create a bit of a "vaccum" to provide better airflow wthin the case. if i were you, i'd put a thermaltake smartfan 2 by ur video, as well as for one of your intake spots, (prefereably the slot lined up with ur proc). a bit of warning tho, the thermatake smartfans are REALLY loud at 75cfm (max), but if you dont mind the noise go for it. right now i have four of em in my case, and it's quite loud, but ive gotten used to it. if i could do it over again, however, iwouldnt blow the 18bucks a piece for the thermaltake fans, newegg.com has clear fans (with blue lights unfortunately), that arent brand name that are llike 60cfm or something and they're really quiet. anyhoo thats my piece....gl with it.

I've got 2 Vantec Thermoflo's as exhaust fans. Bought them off new egg for like $8. Adjust according to case temp. I think they go from like 2000 rpms to 4200 rmps. Works great for me. Also have to Thermaltake fans as intake, but they came with my case. Hell if you want to stay cool, a friend of mine just bought a Vapochill case. Its completely empty, except fot the built in airconditioner. Paid $550. Hes also running case temp at minus 21 degrees celcius.

Ok if I get 1 Thermal Take 2 fan and replace the video card fan, where should I connect the heat sensor? Would there be a specific place on the video card to attach?

The temp I have now is:

CPU = 34 C 93 F but goes to about 42 C or 108 F after runnung a while
Motherboard = 31 C 88 F goes to 34 C or 93 F after running

Are those temps good? Should I think about changing the heat sink and fan for my processor?

Well first of all I'm no expert, but are these temps bios readings or software monitoring? I prefer to check bios. I had had some software that came with my motherboard and differes alot from the bios temps. If you buy those Vantec fans the heat sensors are built onto the fan with a seperate yellow wire to connect to motherboard for rpm monitoring. They almost always run at 3000 to 4000 rpms. If you want to here noise, you should listen to my 7500 rpm cpu fan. That bastard is loud! Thank god for speed control switches.

fyi, more intake than exuaust creates high pressure, not vacume (which is low pressure)... not sure what you were shooting at polax, I would guess that you would want them to be the same so that you dont put a strain on one of them.

Cases are designed as plenums, meaning that they are deisgned so that the air will flow heavier near processors (path of least resistance kind of thing).

I am no computer cooling expert, just know my fluid dynamics.

I use a program called AIDA 32 to check my temp. It is a system info tool. Pretty cool program.

i hear ya death- my beast is running somewhere along the line of 7200 rpm- problem is that if i slow it down for noise purposes then my cpu gets bloody hot as hell...... i'm not sure what seems to be affecting it though- i dunno how to get the temp down without cranking the fan up to rediculously noisy levels!
anyone have any tips as to how i can cool the comp down without having to have my fan blaring loud?

I'm in the process of getting a water cooling system. Its made by Koolance and it mounts ontop of case. Goes for about $250 but I should be getting it for around $100. Hopefully soon! Waiting for a friend to be satisfied with his new Vapochill. If I turn my fan down it runs at like 118 degrees at idle and when gaming 140 degrees. I'm running AMD XP 2200. I have also read that you should replace your Thermal Grease about once a month, that is if you use it and not tape.

Ok, sorry for another post but something else came to mind: RESTRICTED AIR FLOW. Try investing in round IDE cables and get rid of those flat wide grey cables. They are only like $3-$8. I've got 3 of them, 1 for HD, 1 for CD-Rom and 1 for Floppy. Much easier and saves alot of space!!!!!

Yeah death I have seen the Koolance system....very nice, but how are you getting it for $100. I have seen it on line for $250 - $300 depending on what accessories you want to add.

If your CPU only hits 108F after running a while, thats very good. I got a P4 2.53Ghz/533 and she hits around 125F at peak.

I wouldn't even be 1 byte concerned.

Well I had already ordered the fans online before you said I should be fine Xor.......and now it sounds like I have a jet engine in my case...added 2 new fans and they are loud as H#$@. I might try to get used to it, but dont know if that will be possible. Everyone said they would be loud, but I had no idea they would be this loud. LMAO
