Battlefield Vietnam

Official

When more cool stuff is put into something, obviously there needs to be a negative of some sort to balance things out. The positive is the game itself, ALL of it. The negative is... the Bleeping Bleep Bleeep ignorant players themselves, ALL of them.

Besides the "overpowered" M60 that a lot of the US or ARVN use, not much else is used in combat. There's a bunch of snipers, and a bunch of guys with light machine guns, some deity forbid that some guy who appreciates the tactical aspect of the game uses traps (I got kicked from a server because some idiot friendly ran over my caltrops in the middle of nowhere three times!)...

The game truly does require teamwork (tactics and strategy), but the fault is that it is a game, just about none of these pre-teens and young... ahem, "adults", have no militaristic mindset, training nor discipline to understand the fundamentals of actual combat. When I do match up with a (small) group of guys who seem to know what they're doing, we're usually demolished either by the entire enemy army with M60s or when we're attempting to communicate with text.

Most servers, I'm either 1) at 90-125 ping, 2) at 45-70 ping or 3) 10-20 ping. I never seem to flucuate beyond those exact numbers. At One, I'm not confident I should be driving anything that other people would want to hop on with me, the other two, I'm the best damned Bomber pilot you've ever seen (I'm also a pretty good chopper pilot)!

The game runs smoothly at about 50fps (though I do have low-medium settings on everything), play is fun (though many players are almost as horrible as bots on easy mode, they all get stuck running against a wall and crowd all of the vehicles before anyone who could actually do something with it makes it there), and the classic soundtrack kicks ass.

Here's a rather accurate example of how most players are with vehicles. (Fensler Film)

I like it more than CoD, and this will get me used to the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront.

I've got a super wrench! It can fix anything!

Who else got this?

the heli's in BF:Vietnam are 1,000,000,000 x easier to fly than in desert combat.

AHHHHHHHH! What the hell?

Well, this game isn't very noob friendly. COD was the first game besides a handful of console games that I have tried to play (FPS). And COD had a nice little tutorial to get you through the controls.

Vietnam throws me right in the middle of things...and I can't drive a jeep without running into a tree, I can't swim across a river without one of my own people running me down with a boat, I don't even want to talk about the helicopters.

I have no freaking idea what I'm doing, and this game is going to have a nice long learning curve for poor little ole me. Hubby will probably pick it up much faster than I can.

I'm also a little sad that there seems to be no "storyline" of sorts, like the single player in COD. The single player was very important to helping me figure out how to play the game. Vietnam I tried this campaigne where I was just running back and forth between control points trying to figure out WTF. I'd get to one and they'd start hollering that another one was under attack, which of course would either be under control or lost by the time I got anywhere near it.

I'm not complaining (exactly) because I'm not all that familiar with the FPS so I expect it to take a little getting used to but DAMN!

Ah well...as it stands I like COD better because it's a hell of a lot easier for me to play, though Vietnam looks like it would be a lot of fun if I could figure it out.

you were spoiled by COD ayyyla, it was probably the single best fps single player I have played to date (and I have played my fair share). That is the high bar, and sounds like BFV is the low bar, you will find most are in the middle, try the single player SOFII... you will see what the norm is.

Battle Field Vietnam Complexity (clickie!)

BF:V teams EA and DICE assume that you're a veteran of BF1942.

Make use of single player. Practice.

We still have 1942 and an expansion in the box, never opened, never played. I was thinking maybe I should have started out with that one before jumping right into Vietnam...

And maybe so if they are assuming I knew something about the game before I started this one.

Hehe, I like to be spoiled Yaz. :-P

Den...yeah, I'll have to practice practice practice...and that will be just so I am at a level of I really suck instead of I suck beyond words. going to clickie now...hahahaha clickie is funny. Yeah, that's about right.

With the release of BFV 1.1, the game has fallen into the depths of... the shelf. Right next to Daikatana and Superman 64. Many of the BFV fanboys had fallen off the bandwagon before 1.1 even came into light with the advent of Joint Operations.

The Swedish team (made the original, '42, which was and is awesome) had better make good on BF2, since the Canadian team (yaar, shameless Canadian bashing) funked up Vietnam. I have a feeling that United Offensive expansion will revive CoD (which is still as boring as any other Quake3 game).
