lifesavers! (starwars)
RE: lifesavers! (starwars)
Do some research, Son-John.
Republic commando is a super-duper arcadey FPS. The demo lasts about ten minutes and shows some arbitary use of weapons and your squad.
As "Boss" the squad leader, you are given a blaster mount "Interchangeable combat system" that can have attachments put on to turn it into three different guns (a machinegun, scoped rifle and grenade launcher), while your three squadmates are stuck with only two or one. Along with the DC17M, Boss has a DC15s pistol (which is of course my favorite part), and he can carry one other weapon he picks up on the field at a time. The enemy or other weapons include a shotgun, a heavy minigun, and a long-range laser gun.
The heads up display is "realistic" in that it exists on Boss's helmet you see in the corner of the screen. The tactical view shows the location and condition of your squadmates, as well as points of interest. There is also a low-light view that you can switch to to light up dark areas. Best part, if you bash or shoot an enemy up close, his blood will spray on the visor, wherein Boss turns on the windshield wipers.
Squadmates are... not so good in this demo. Kinda. Sometimes they take cover from a midget with a pistol, sometimes they run up to the heavily-armored trandosian with the minigun, and sometimes they get stuck on a block of wood trying to get to the bacta healing tank. At least they listen.
There is multiplayer, but its not on the demo. From SP play, think of it as a far faster-paced Halo without vehicles. The graphics are very Halo-ish, somewhat (looks more animated than realistic), on the Unreal engine, and runs with everything on high well on my PC.
Full game release on March 1. I'm looking forward to it, if only for the pistol! ...I mean, the single-player.

I haven't tried the demo yet, but you are the first person to even sound remotely positive about it out of the write-ups I've read so far about it.
RE: lifesavers! (starwars)
What write-ups are you reading? Most articles I've read approve of the game, and of the few I read that were somewhat negative was a united complaint that this game "takes from other games like Rainbow Six/Halo". Somehow Halo suddenly becomes all great and everything it does is original because it happens to be the first good shooter on the XBOX.
And of course I'm positive: the pistol has infinite ammo!

The writeups were coming off of ShackNews which I usually take a little more seriously since these are typically your hardcore gamers, but like I said, I haven't tried it yet and I was just saying that you were the first person that I had seen with a positive write-up.
I'll have to grab the demo sometime and give it a go.....cause any game with unlimited pistol ammo can't be all that bad.....

Yeah, I just finished playing the demo. I like the context sensitive commands you can issue to your squad. Also, if you end up messing up, on of your team mates can revive you within a few seconds. They are relativly smart, yet there were times when a Trandoshan was sitting right beside me and they did squat. Actually thought it was on of my squad mates until it squawked at me. There were also times where it felt like you were too bunched up in certain areas because your guys wouldnt spread out properly (this doesnt include the zones where you set up sniper and anti-armor positions).
Overall, I thought it was a pretty cool game, definetly worth picking up.
