any ideas?

Post by Grudge »

well as of yesterday (8-10-05) I have been distressingly unemployed, not a great situation with the house payment and car payments and a baby on the way. So what I was wondering, hopeing actually, was wether anyone knows of a free online game I can download to play during my situation... let me know if you have any ideas. thanks- Grudge

There are some out there, easily found if you google "free MMORPG" or similar terms. Unfortunatly, I will be surprised if you can find one that will last you more than a week. Usually, the free ones either just really suck, or only let you play a small portion of the game / 14 day trial (which may require your credit card number).

Runescape seems to be the most popular free MMORPG that you can play (popular because I hear about more than others). In a sense, it's kinda similar to Ultima Online. With a free account, you can play only a part of the game, but I have friends who played their free accounts for months. I guess you can check it out if that interests you.

Ragnarok gives you a free trial (I forget how long it is) and doesn't require a CC number. It isn't really all that great, but a lot of people seem addicted to it (even in PHX?!) and you may like it. WARNING! It is extremely cutsy-carebear-creampuff...ish.

Like I said, there's more than a few out there, I doubt you'll find one of good quality. I recommend simply going to EB and getting a used/old game for like 10$. I'm not sure how much Neverwinter Nights costs nowadays, but it is a fairly long game and has a lot of replay value (a bunch of races, classes, side quests, etc.) Plus, there's a ton of fan-made modules that can keep you playing for quite some time. Definetly worth checking out. If you like fantasy D&D/Forgotten Realms stuff.

well thanks for the list, i will check out your ideas and see if any suit me. otherwise I am going to stare into the fridge until I turn my blood into butter by adding as much fat and cholesterol as I can. I think I am already over the legal BBL (Butter to Blood Level). I try to add beer tothin my buttter...er blood but it just slides right thru my system, but dammit I have to try.

Also, look for Betas. You can usually check out GameSpot's Beta Center for what you can sign up for.

anarchyonline is free if you can put up with billboard ads...you can only play the classic version though and don't get access to any of the new areas but there is still a crapload to explore.

I played rose for about a week....i guess its ok for a free beta, but it was just too childish for me,with killing jelly beans and butterflys and what-not. I do however have a friend that has played it since it first came out, and after a few resets he is still at about level 80

There is also Guildwars if your into a Shadowbane type environment, a simular game or so I hear, it's like $35 dollars right now, and you don't have to pay a monthly bill, just the $35 bucks and your on your way, downfall Race:Human 7 different classes, that's all I know from a friend at work.
