Latest Demos I've Played

Post by Archangelus »

Thought it might be a good idea to start mentioning some demos that I've been playing to either spur or prevent individuals from playing them. (BTW, we have a reviews section in our main site....we really should all start using it - submitting reviews for items)

Anyways:

IGI2 Multiplayer Demo - Good graphics, fun, but way way way too much running around before you even get to shoot someone. It had potential, but this one can remain on the shelf for me.

VietCong - This sucked as much as the real war did....Graphics bit, gameplay was difficult, and reminded me of a cheap SoF2.

CounterStrike 1.6 - Ok, this isn't a demo, but I fired it up. It's cool and all, but the graphics are still dated, too many vulnerabilities, and I can't stand that I have to buy weapons.

Demos I still need to try:

CnC Generals
Age of Mythology
(Anything else I can get my hands on)

Later,

Demos

Post by DickHertz »

I've been playing a few demos too. Not all of them or First Person Shooters. I rank them out of 10 points

O.R.B. (Off world Resource Base) 5/10- A space based real time strategy game. You send ships out to harvest resources, spend those resources researching new technologies and building war ships, then you send those ships to smash your foes in to little pieces.
This game is so so. You only have 2 races to choose from and their technologies are pretty much identical. They have a 3D Component to the game which allows you to pan around these great ships you build, but.. all in all... its just eye candy and has no real functional advantage.

Raven Shield 8/10 - A first person shooter which mimics a modern day infiltration team to take out terrorists, drug dealers, cult members, etc. It allows you to choose from quite a few different tactical weapons from around the world as well as generic assault rifles.
The game has a more realistic damage model the SOFII. If you are shot in the leg, you start limping, it only takes one good burst to kill your opponent. After playing for a while i realized that this game is just like paintball. One of the demo maps even has netting out around the outside and flood lights in the middle of the field so you can see. I do like the subtleties though, such as if you shoot a guy at the top of the stairs, he will fall and slide down them.

Praetorians 4/10 - Set in ancient Rome, its a pretty simple real time strategy game. You don't even need peasants or peons to go gather resources for you. They just give you troops (or you take troops, I'm sure the romans just took what ever the hell the wanted)
All in all the combat is fairly interesting that's all their is. Their is not building defense structures, no accelerating development because you can micro manage your peons well. A little too one dimensional for me.

Midieval Total War 9/10 - This game has all of the pieces you'd expect from someone who did their homework. They have a wide array of troop types from each of the different countries at the time.
Their combat system is quite nice. They take in to account # of missiles archers, crossbow men, and siege engines have. Morale is a factor as well as morale boosts from having leaders near the units. Unfortunately, the demo only has a few tutorials and none of the strategic game play.

That's it for now. I am anxiously awaiting MOO3 (Masters of Orion 3) Its suppose to come out in Feb. but we'll see.

Command and Conquer: Generals
Master of Orion 3
Savage

I didn't like Raven Shield...or Vietcong.

Unreal II

Post by DragonReborn »

Well unfortunately there is not going to be an Unreal II demo. Read the following:

Sad, but true. Unreal 2 will not have a demo released. From what I gather, the game is basically done and Legend (developers) don't have the time to continue work on the game. I guess they have something more important to work on.

Here's the comment they left for us:

As much as we'd like to create a "true" demo, it's simply not possible. Legend have moved on to other projects and the production of a demo - even from already existing levels would require time and effort that we just don't have. It would then have to go through QA - another organization that is working on other projects and cannot dedicate time to a UII demo. It's all about the allocation of "assets". A later follow-up:

Now that Unreal II has gone gold, we've been exploring the possibility with Infogrames and Epic, which is something that Headup wasn't aware of. FWIW, everyone involved - including Legend - is very conscious of the benefits of a demo, and we'd all love to do it. I hope to have more news soon. Also FWIW, don't read anything into Headup's post concerning Legend's dedication to supporting Unreal 2. Even while Legend transitions onto other projects, Unreal 2 is still our top priority.
