800th video card post

Post by Levangles »

just want to ask a speicif question in regards to video cards...

trying to get my family members to pool together to get me a new card for christmas...

i dont know what all the "gt" and the "se" and crap like that means after all the cards... i was looking at the 6800 gt, 256 meg.... is this a decent card or does the gt mean somthing bad. i see that its not as good as the ultra model, but i dont think that price dif is gonna be plausible.

also- are there any other cards of similar quality that i should look at instead.. i dont really care whether its ati or nvidia.. same shit different pile. i've used both and had troubles with neither.

-- 560$(the gt model i talked about above) vs 780$(the ultra model)
in monopoly money, i mean canadian dollars.

I can testify that the nvidia 6800 GT is a darn good card. Of course, that partially depends on the make. I got the Gigabyte one. I'm not real familiar with the current top o' the line ATI cards, but if you're looking at nvidia, I'd say the GT is more cost effective than the Ultra, and can be overclocked to Ultra speeds if you are so inclined. Just my $100 thought (monopoly money).

thanks for feedback.... yea i have ati right now and i really do love it- its an old 8500 from a number of years back but still muscles away in games it really has trouble supporting, like half life 2 and sometime wow.
so here are my options, i'll include makes and prices in monopoly money

$425 Asus v9999/GT GF-6800GT 128MB DDR 8xAGP w/TV & DVI Retail
$519 Asus v9999/GE GF-6800 256MB DDR3 8xAGP w/TV & DVI Retail
$419 ATI Radeon X800SE 256MB DDR AGP8X w/S-Video & DVI-I Sapphire
$535 ATI Radeon X800 Pro 256MB DDR AGP8X w/S-Video & DVI-I Sapphire
$559 MSI (MS-8966-01S) NX6800 GT-T2D256 256MB DDR3 AGP8x w/TV & D-DVI

obviously looking at which is the best overall value

edit: oh and the other question i had was is there a really big difference made by having the extra 128mb on the card? or does the quality of card/make make more difference?

$559 MSI (MS-8966-01S) NX6800 GT-T2D256 256MB DDR3 AGP8x w/TV & D-DVI

That is the card I would recommend out of the ones you listed, as that is the exact card I was going to go with until I switched to the MSI 6800 Ultra at the last second.

I know for a fact that with stock cooling that MSI 6800 GT should be able to clock the same as an ultra if you really want it to.

This year isn't like last round, there is absolutely zero reason to go with an ATI card right now, as they have zero support for PS3.0, hardware displacement mapping, and are slower than the nVidia counterparts. Also if you like to OC the nVidia's can be clocked higher. Added to this you won't have to deal with all the ATI driver headaches.

Also you DONT want a 128MB 6800 GT. The reason for the GT/Ultra's are so that you can run at very high res with AA and Ansiotropic filtering. With only 128MB the card is basically gimped because the mipmaps have to swap from system memory to card memory. Just to repeat, never ever ever ever ever get a 128MB 6800 GT or Ultra.
I have no sig.

If you do a 128MB card, do the 6600 GT. Obviously not a high performing as the 6800's, but awesome job for about 1/3 - 1/2 the cost.

i have th asylum and the msi 6800 gt card and they both rock. i still have 4 5900 asylums running in other machine's which still produce excellent graphgics on the new games. NVidia is the only way to go.
