PC Help!
I'm trying to fix a freinds PC and have seem to run in to trouble. The main problem was that it no longer was able to acess the net. Everytime I tried to open IE, it would look for a win32 file and tell me there was no internet connection. So, I thought either he deleted something he should not have or he had a virus. This machine was a bitch to work with. I mean, everytime I booted up it took 20min before it finally stoped trying to finish installing 5 different programs. Well, anyway.....! The MB has its own ethernet connection and I totally suck with this. I cant even get mine to work. So I put in a 3rd party ethernet card and format and at the end of the Win XP instalation it tells me windows cannot find any connection to the internet, so, I format again and nothing. I go through the Connection wizard to establish a connection, and nothing again. WTF is going on here? Is there a virus that won't go away by formating? Could there be something wrong with MB? Would I benifit by going into DOS and using F-Disk? I'm going fucking insane with this. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, for starters try :
> ipconfig /all
(if your IP address is 192.168.0.X then you are behind NAT)
Just make sure your IP address is NOT 169.254.Y.Z or 0.0.0.0
try pinging your gateway address (typically W.X.Y.1 -- for example 192.168.0.1) and see if you get destination unreachable (check cables if this is the case)
if you get an IP address from an ISP to your adapter than your IP will be a public address. Again try pinging this address with the last octet being 1 (gateway)

Let's stop there for now ...

Another thing to try....
-Different Patch Cable
-Different Port on router/switch (if applicable)
-BIOS Settings (usually on-board LAN is Enabled/Disabled there)

OK, lets break this down:
Xor: while I understand how to do the IPconfig and I know how to ping a web site, I'm a lot, lost with the gateway and x.y.z.stuff. If you could break it down a little simpler for this simple minded person (LOL) that would help.
Arch: I checked all the cables and everything works fine when connected to my PC. I checked bios for the enable/disable option and could not find it. The bios are a almost the same as mine. I tried working on this yesterday with a migrane and was a little to impatiante, but they are enabled and working properly.
Midnight: I would if I could!

So, what is your IP address?
This number will help tell us if you are at least talking.
let's say your IP address is 192.168.0.20
you would type ping 192.168.0.1 (your gateway)
Or let's say your address is 24.225.35.204 (fictional)
your gateway address would depend on your subnet mask, but the IP address of your gateway will be listed when you do ipconfig /all
ping the gateway address.
If you're pinging stuff ok, then we may be looking at name resolution problems.
