Small PC problem

Ok here it goes...my wifes laptop had to go in for service...screen problem, sent in through Best Buy since we had the PSP warrenty. Well they screwed up sent it to the wrong place and long story short its been a month and the wife uses my comp from time to time.

Well every so often at the bottom of my screen on the taskbar a small tab pops up for just a few seconds with what looks like an empty IE box. I have gone through all the processes that are running, and nothing seems to be spyware. I have ran Microsofts Beta AntiSpyware program, AdAware, and even Spybot. None of these programs find a thing. An associate at Best Buy told me to try SpySweeper, but thanks to Mid I didn't use that lol.

So I am wondering if anyone has any idea what this little annoyance could be , Could there possibly be something in the registrery? Would a program like Registery Booster be safe?

Try Autoruns from sysinternals. This fantastic free program goes deeper than anything else I've seen.

Ok I found a few lines that looked odd...let me know if this is what I am looking for or maybe something else:

Ok that looks like all the missing items...the WinZip was there 4 times. Also, everytime I google one of the items it gives me a brief description and sends me to Registery Booster every time. Here is the link:

Hehe yeah, it's a bit like looking at a Boeing777 cockpit at first, but what you are looking for are programs that are starting up. The winzip thing and other missing files shouldn't cause the problem you are reporting. You can always try unchecking the box on a few suspect items to see what happens.

This may be a tough one to resolve without actually seeing your computer in action.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's all the AOL ( aolsoftware.exe - aoldial.exe - portaol.exe ). That's 3 .exe's firing up on every boot.

Just a guess, but unless you use AOL (lol) you should be able to uninstall all AOL related items from ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in the control panel.

Try restarting after that, and then double check autoruns to make sure all AOL related entries are deleted. If it leaves litter behind, just uncheck its box.

If you do use AOL, well ... at least you know the cause.

i would also reinstall directx. the dxdllreg.exe is used to re-register your directx for the video card and if it is missing your graphics are running half-lit.

Sigh....took all the AOL out, little box still pops up. LOL....I went ahead and downloaded Registery Booster and it showed 166 bad files in the registery. Now it will fix 15 of them for free and then you have to pay for the rest, Is it worth it to get the program??

Nope. It's a scam I tell you!!

Well, from the looks of things - it has to be one of those programs starting that causes the popup. The HP scanner, your MSN messenger (msmsgs.exe) or something.

Without actually seeing the popup thingy, it's tough to diagnose in text. I doubt it's anything malicious.

But, like I always like to say ... IF YOUR COMPUTERS BEING A WHORE ... FORMAT AND RESTORE

Lol thanks a lot Xor, Hp and msn has been on there forever...But MSN seems to keep coming back no matter how many times I delete it. It has to be something the wife did lol....she "says" she didnt download anything, but its only been happening since her comp was gone and she was using mine....but the good news is Best Buy called and her comp is back and ready to pick up!!! YES!!
