Shockwave is actually quite powerful and has access to use OpenGL for rendering. It is actually an area I have looked into a lot as it can be a huge revenue-generator (look at Runescape where they estimate 70%+ of the popularity is due to being accessible web-based).

I think a couple of my buddies were playing that in class not too long ago. They were trying to get a multiplayer server started, but couldn't get it working. For a Shockwave game, it's actually really good. Definetly long the lines of the old Unreal Tournament and Quake.
