OK basically I downloaded a major virus onto my computer that I thought was another program that I got off a friend. Anyway the file was about 800MBs in 3 cds total and when I opened it it just went nuts, It messed up my cable mode, system properties and hit Norton anti virsu first. I'll kill my friend later, I don't know if it was his fault but I'll get him back.

Basically I can still play sof2 and go online but thats all, I can't use Ventrillo as all of my USB ports are being 'unrecongized'

Normally this wouldn't bother me, but I reinstalled my operating system and I found that about 3 gigs of files on my computer (The non pornographic ones) that contained doccuments and files for school were erased.

Basically this thing is eating away at my computer.

I'm in the process of backing everyhting up now because I don't know what will go next. Then I have to wipe the harddrive and put it back up..

This is really bothering me though because as some of you know My networking system is getting hooked up tomorrow (Sunday) and I need this computer to be virus free or else I'm going to have a hell of a lot more problems.

So what I'm trying to say is I might not have contact with you guys for about a week or so depending on how soon I can get the problem fixed.

God this pisses be off, But I'm going now, and I will talk to you all later when I get back, Miss me already?

That sux man. Well, i definitly wont be going on Vent anymore unless its for a match. I found out this morning that its pretty much Vent thats been giving so much lag. Went on earlier today without going on Vent and i think i lagged once. So, i doubt you'll be seeing me so often on it anymore.

I've been seeing the same lag in Ventrilo while in it, (and this was when I was in there with Yazule AFK and WasteOSkin's kids just audible enough to turn the voice sensitivity on) and I was not hitting, but actually going at an unchanging, slow speed.

When I quit SoF2 real quick, Ventrilo showed me at 450 Ping. I logged off Vent, played SoF2 again and got nothing. Its really draining latency lately.

Well, after further experimenting, i found out that Ven does lag my game. But, even without it on, i lag just as much on our server. I came in for the last minute or so and i spent atleast 80% of the time lagging. I have to find the solution to my lag.

Yeah, IMO I doubt it's Ventrilo lagging you. It doesn't lag me at all, no difference.

Sometimes my ISP just goes nutz on me and I lag at about 165 ping average in the servers. Sometimes it lasts for an hour, other times it's lasted for 2 months. Something similar might be happening to you Undead, do you have Cable?

Sorry to hear about that man. Be sure not to BACK UP THE VIRUS. Be sure to install and update NAV completely before you restore ANY of your old data. Also, see if you can research what virus you got hit with. That way you can at least see what file(s) get whacked or what it does.

It's a jungle out there...

lol...my last virus scan revieled 6 viruses, they did not however do any damage for some reason.

I've never gotten a virus that's actually done something to my computer.

Yeah that's a blow eh Zarn, what kinda virus protection you got?

I've got Norton Anti-Virus (constant update), a firewall, a router, and BlackIce to protect...all good stuff. lol. though my router is a pain in the patooie if ya know what I mean.

Viruses typically need to be executed to get their blades spinning. An infected file that is never run/called won't deliver its payload.

Thanks to BillyWare, the ease of arbitrary execution of things in privlaged mode (aka SYSTEM) is usually a piece of cake.

So the viruses that were detected most likely were traps yet unsprung, consider yourself lucky. Today's viruses are becoming pretty violent and stealthy (read KERNEL mode virus) and even the best AV's cannot snag them.

Bottom line, run as a unprivlaged user and use only software from trusted sources.

vent is not lagging you, you just look for an excuse when your ISP is giving you low bandwitdth... if you have dsl or cable then there is more than enough bandwidth for both.

I'm still here, My computer is functioning fairly, now I'm getting pop ups about every 30 seconds. Looks like the virus is in phase two!

Anyway the popups are now only stopping me from playing sof2

but I can still us my Alt+f4 to slay them while I'm online.

Yeah well I had that whole Norton System works protection thing but like I said the virus hit it first and that was the first thing to go down, followed by system restore.

But The virus came with a file that I downloaded and I was sure not to back that up.

So since I'm here let me get into the topic here.

I have never gotten any lag due to ventrillo, and I know that because I never lag on servers. If I do its due to either Kazza or a server spike.

So I can't give much imput there.

Kazza == Virus just waiting to happen.

Many of the viruses out there are actualy made to take down the anti-virus programs first, firewalls second, and then start doing the real damage.
be very carefull of what you backup as you may be backing up the virus anyway. Most virus out there lately are meant to install a "backdoor" onto your system. By backing up all the files on your computer, you may be backing up hte backdoor as well and still giving others access to your system. Even if you dont install a backdoor, a file you backup may not be what you think it is. It could have been taken over by the virus, and re-execute it on the clean system.

Ugh! The last big virus i had was the Backdoor Trojan. Becuz of that little bitch, i got constant pop-ups a la ton. Plus, programs over the internet just decided on their own to install themselves on my cmputer. Luckily, i have a computer techy cousin who fixed everything.

And Yaz, everytime i give the reason of my lag, you always say "excuses". And im pretty sure what u just posted wasnt as a joke. Look, everytime im on Vent, every round ill get lag (usually depending which server). I went on yesterday all day without lag, and it was amazing how much less lag i got. So dont give me that BS that Vent isnt causing the problem.

I guess I am lucky.

And it's weird that I havn't gotten any, cuz I use Imesh alot and we all know the spyware that comes outta that place eh. And of course I'm a downloadin' phreak. So I guess that my virus time hasn't come yet...and lets hope it never does eh.

I guess the only virus problem I had was when one deleted half of my folder...but I had a backup of it so no problems there.
