Hey, i'm thinking off trying to get a new pc for christmas and i was wondering if you guys would be so kind as to give me a few pointers:
Firstly i was wondering is it worth while splashing out for the GeForce 8800 series or not, since i found one for about £350, and although its meant to be "fully DX10 supporting" etc is it worth it?
Next, is Socket 939 better or worse than Socket AM2 or no difference?
Does anyone know of a reliable and affordable RAM company? (any pointers to a product greatly appreciated)
Finally, are there any amazing motherboards out there that are a "must buy" or can i go with something that simply runs at the same speed as all my other components? (+ something about decent cooling systems if anyone knows of any, if not ill have a lot of reading to do)
Thanks for any "knowledge sharing" guys, although its not really sharing, as i dont think i have anything worth while in return.. apart from my gratitude i guess lol

Couple of PC questions...
RE: Couple of PC questions...
Sup Pink cheeks, how's it going bro?
Since I like throwing pennies into the fountain ...
1) I just bought a 8800GTX (you know, to go along with my new 24")
and I can tell you right now that this thing takes no prisoners. Whether it's worth it or not comes down to your situation. Any way you cut it, the 8800 is the best right now, and if you're in the market for buying a nice new graphics card anyway, well there ya go.
2) As far as AMD's architecture goes, let them charge their batteries for a bit, intel is back in black with to Core2duo, and there's nothing that anyone can do about it. I am curious of AMD's 4x4 quad core chip for 2007, but for now, intel has captured AMD's flag. The core2 E6600 is the best bang for your buck I would say. (AMD will no doubt circle the wagons)
3) Kingston, Crucial, Corsair, OCZ ... just to name a few. All good.
4) Motherboards traditionally don't cause much sensation. ASUS, ABIT, Giga-byte ... All the same to me. Personally, I buy ASUS. The main thing to pay attention to is the chipset to facilitate your CPU. Just do your research
These are just my ramblings, by no means authoritative.

I just got a new mobo and i installed it myself.(im pretty proud of that)I took out my 2.4ghz chip and installed it into my new mobo.I purchased an ECS mobo because everywhere i looked they were sold out of my asrock 478 mobo i wanted. This mobo offers HTT but my chip isnt made for it. That can be something i upgrade to later. I can now upgrade my video card to the new drivers but i really havent seen any difference in the gaming side. I still lag in BF2 and cod2. It could be my internet connection. The mobo offers a connection to the internet but im having trouble getting it to work, so for now im using a pci port card for the time being.
As for my ram, i have to agree with xor. Crucial has some fine shit. Im running a 1gig chip and its sweet.

Grats Zero on not shorting out your city block!
j/k man good job. Something that REALLY helps on BF2 with older hardware is go into the video settings and turn "Dynamic Shadows" to OFF. My buddy has a similar setup to yours (2.4ghz) and he got over 10-15 fps for just that one setting.
Also, don't forget to install the drivers from your Motherboard CD (that's where your mobo's network card drivers are as well)
