MMO's in 2008

Post by JungleJim »

With the new year here, I am tempted to dabble in the MMO world again.

I tried the free 14 day COH (city of heroes/villians) it was kind of cool, but not something I really am into or challenged with.

I went back to WOW sometime in Sep/Oct for 1 month, and I remembered why I quited, and left again.

I am waiting for Warhammer Online (2nd Quarter 2008) or I have some good recommendations for Age of Conan which is like March 2008 or so.

I have revisited EQ2 as well and got tired of kiddies killing me in the low end zones, I think I only made it up to level 15 on there.

Trying to find something to kick around for next couple of months before I do something stupid and startup my WOW account again.

Any recommendations or suggestions, Arch always has a good recommendation!!!

Like yourself, I got sucked back into WoW. I played a Draenei Hunter for a bit before the Christmas break. When I came back, all the guys from BoB (the guild I played BF2 with, most of which are friends in RL) were playing and wnated me to join them. Long story short, I'm now leveling a Dwarf Priest.

I have high hopes for Age of Conan. I like their take on combat (no more auto attack), they have unique classes, crafting sounds interesting, and the PVP might actually be fun!

Warhammer also looks interesting. It will be heavily developed for PVP combat, so that also might be fun. Playing as a Witch Hunter of Chaos Chosen seems so badass.

Aside from those 2 games, I'm not sure what else to look for.

Well, I've toyed with starting up an EVE Online acct while waiting for AoC, but then I always remind myself that I'm so far behind in that universe and I don't know if I'll have the time. The thing I'm really interested in AoC for is that I'm wanting to be a crafter and frankly, I would love to be an Architect for the City Building if given the opportunity.

So, I'd say maybe look at EVE....

well jim, good to see you

we are tinkerin around in eq2 still but there is a lot of interest from different directions for aoc as has been mentioned.

If you have an eq2 account, you could dabble there for a couple of months. Join up with us on nagafin. They eliminated level locking by giving 2-5% of a level for each pvp kill even if exp locked at lower levels.

There are still the gank squads (in all tiers, that is any pvp game for you) but they are not super uber toons that have not leveled in 6 months and payed higher level characters to help them get the low end fabled for them.

would love to hear ya in vent again, midnight, roo, myself you know already, xiede (my gal) and fimo, popg and veminus are new full members and we play daily.

eve is actually pretty amazing as well, though very very very in depth.

I am not a fan of instanced pvp so wow is not for me, but many people seem to still enjoy it.

If you want some free fun check out Anarchy Online. THey give free accounts as does shadowbane i think, but not with full funcionality. I really enjoyed AO when i played years ago, just got burnt on it.

wherever you go good luck and hope to see you soon in aoc.

Jim if you decide to give EVE a try let me know. I can give you a hand in game and can answer any of your questions. I can take a bit to get into as it is in depth but they've just recently redone the tutorial again and it's a lot less daunting then it was. Also you might want to check out Tabula Rasa. i think I can get you a 3 day trial of the game if you want to try before you buy. It can be quite fun thought they still need to fill out a lot of content at higher levels, but if you're trialling it for a few days that won't be a problem.

About the only MMO I'm even remotely looking at in 2008 is AoC. WAR just doesn't seem to grab me at all.

Thanks everyone for the great input and ideas, looks like everyone is on the same page.

I have downloaded the Eve trial, and did the tutorial, gonna try a bit more tonight (Jungle Tiger). It is very detailed, and the game style and play havent really impressed me yet, but I will give it more time. I might be interested in the Tabula Rasa, I read some about it, but as nobody seemed to be trying or playing it, I wasn't sure, didnt want to be the only playing in the guild.

It seems like I have to wait for AOC and Warhammer which are going to come around spring summer, which I will probably be less on the computer. I guess I will keep trying trials until something tweaks my fancy :)

I'm still trying to figure out what game will fill the MMO hole in my life. Right now I'm perfectly happy playing the console sometimes and more creative activities that have little to nothing to do with gaming.

I was thinking Warhammer but I've started to have some doubt. I do not look forward to spending more hours in that same genre (dwarves, elves, trolls, yadda yadda orc whatever). If the PVP is as bloody annoying as WOW I'm not sure I'll be all that interested.

I didn't like COH though I tried. I tried Lotro and couldn't get much into that either. Tabula Rasa held little interest and I played Hellgate in the beta and was totally unimpressed. I unno about AOC. I haven't really thought any on Conan either. We'll see. I think for now I'm just going to hang out a while and enjoy my free time until something more appealing comes along.

I echo (echo) people's sentiments about the MMO space. hOMG WoW still holds my interest somehow, as I only play casually whenever I need to brush up on the latest barren chat insult acronyms. I wouldn't want to fall behind, and WoW is the zenith for bleeding edge wtfpwnaphors.

Basically, I'm just going to follow the herd wherever it wanders, and graze on the plains of our "next" MMO - whatever it may be.

baaaaaah.
