Yes, Mid. I understand where you are coming from. There is a difference between stability of the OS itself versus the stability of the programs within the OS. Regardless, there are many issues with Vista as a whole compared to other Operating Systems (XP, OSX, etc...). You only have to go to any trade rag to see the number of businesses that are holding off on Vista due to application incompatibility, security restrictions (who would have thought MS would make an OS "too secure"), and performance issues. Vista is consistently shown to be slower than XP on similar hardware. SP1 brings some performance improvements, mainly in file transfer speeds when doing copies which was a major complaint, but overall the performance improvement w/ SP1 is 1-2%.

XP SP2 compared to Vista RTM show that XP in general is faster on similar hardware, especially when running single-core applications which most games are. Vista is better at running multi-core applications than XP given that it has over 1GB of RAM, but again - most of us are using our PCs for gaming, not graphic rendering or intricate programming. XP SP3 is going to increase this performance gap as the already faster OS is getting a roughly 10% performance boost. Also, XP has been out for seven years now. That's seven years to have fixes integrated, hardware manufacturers taking full advantage of the OS' features, and software developers to learn best practices for developing on the platform.

There's nothing saying that Vista isn't going to be a great OS. There's nothing saying that given a horse of a machine, you won't scream (performance-wise) with Vista. All I'm saying personally, is that if i'm building a machine strictly for gaming right now, there is no way in hell that I'm putting Vista on there. One man's opinion. Nothing more. Nothing less.

I appreciate people that have Vista on their machine with no problems. I think it comes down to what works best for you. For me, Vista never really answered the "why" question, but that's why I have 2 hard drives with XP and Vista dual boot - works great. I just happen to like XP's presentation and simplicity better.

I know a lot of people that get so upset over Vista, they want to take a sledgehammer to their laptop/PC. The esoteric messages and combination complexity for an average user who couldn't give 2 shats about the inner workings will make them disable/shut off and work around things so they are less secure and more open then ever. I don't know. I look forward to seeing Vista a year from now.

Oh, just to pass on a tidbit - If you want to dual boot Vista and XP ... Install XP first. It's a pain if you do Vista first. (rule of thumb - oldest OS first)
