ArmA...has anybody played?

Post by Vertisce »

I currently play an FPS game called ArmA. Here is the site...

It's definately not for everybody. You have to have a certain amount of patience and a certain style of play for this game. There is a lot to it and it is pretty hard whether you are playing against the computer or in PVP. There are some pretty awsome video's out there for it on Youtube. Do a search for ArmA Cobra and the Cobra Attack vid is pretty damned good. I cannot get a link for it right now as I am at work. Ill try and post some stuff on it later. Check it out and lemme know what you all think. I would be interested in knowing if any of you wanna play.

I am Cryosis btw in AoC.

I beta-tested it and never really got into it. I'm assuming they've fixed up the crappy AI a fair bit since then but I never really settled into the pace of the whole thing.
Time stops for no-one. Why should I?

It is pretty slow paced if you are solo and don't know what to do. Me and my buds make it interesting. We have a guy that makes maps and believe me...they are HARD. Imagine constant helicoptor raids as well as hundreds of people out in the field to kill...and several more cities just like it. It's all very hard to explain...you gotta play the game to understand just how in depth the game is...ill grab some links for vids right now but believe me...when you see your first nuke go off in game...you will be hooked.

Here is a vid for the upcoming ArmA 2 game. Date of release has yet to be announced...

Again...ArmA is not an easy game. The AI is hard...the controls can be daunting at first but you get used to them. The game personally looks better than BF2 and has a map that is 40 times the size of any map in BF2. Finally...one of my favorite vids from ArmA...

This will give you an idea of just how big the map is...

If you like what you see buy it. But please do not blame me if you are dissapointed. This game is definately not for everybody and requires a lot of patience. If you want to play let me know I am an admin on a server and can put up some pretty fun maps and get you used to the game as well as help you with settings that you will need to change.

Here are some more if you can stand to keep watching...

Ok that's enough...keep in mind some of the video's done are on some pretty crappy systems. My system plays all settings at full with max distance on and it looks beautiful. The game is highly moddable as well. There are mods to make the sounds more realistic as well as the explosions and gunfire.

Sweet...lemme know when you get it. One thing that really stands out to me in this game is the ambience. I remember once playing at night while it was raining. Had my night vision goggles on and lightning strikes would occure from time to time blinding me. I was on a hill with a lasermarker and my buddy was up in the air with a harrier that had some BDU's on it. I had another buddy that was watching my back for the NPC's that would occaisionally come up and try to kill us. I would mark a target for the jet and seconds later I could see the bomb fall and the subsequent explosion as the valley would light up briefly.

Another time it was at night and storming at the american airbase. A couple buddies and I took a mission to destroy some heavy armor targets and then rescue a downed pilot. We used a boat to travel accross the bay to our destroy mission. Again it is night and stormy...the waves would actually get pretty high and it really felt like you were in this storm. The storm eventually passed (There is actually a weather pattern in the game...you can see fog, rain and whatnot on the map.) as we approached our target. We get out...destroy the tanks at night and I get killed by an AI that flanked us. (AI is pretty damned smart sometimes). I respawned and got in a littlebird. I picked up my friends with the chopper and we went and rescued the downed pilot. Along the way you have Shilka's (Anti Air armor) shooting at us. You could see the tracer rounds just spraying all over the place. I was able to fly low enough to get past em all and land. We rescued the pilot killing his guards with our sniper rifles using good teamwork and timing. Got in the chopper...and after again passing all the anti air managed to get all the way to base only for me to run into some telephone lines that I was unable to see untill it was too late...lol
