RE: Free FPS Combat Arms
I'd really like to wait to get Den's opinion first....
RE: Free FPS Combat Arms
Imagine Rainbow Six weapons mixed with Enemy Territory combat and the userbase consisting of players migrating from all of Nexon's free generic Korean MMORPGs.
That is to say, hideously inaccurate aiming unless you're standing still, many body hits to kill a guy, yet headshots are easy to get by levelling at head-height and letting loose.
That's only for the initial gun.
After that, the weapons you pay for are more powerful and accurate.
Instead of picking and choosing or racking up cash and spending it every round, you have to build up your... global bank to RENT weapons and equipment (clothing included) for a real-time day, week, month. Because of the way the purchasing goes, spraying is REAL easy for those who get the better weapons. These aren't balanced or real-representative weapons; each, more expensive gun is infinitely more powerful than the one before it, and when you wield the more pricey guns, you can dominate and run and jump around action style like Soldier of Fortune or Enemy Territory, while everybody with no cash and the starter M16 are defenseless. Even the next-up AK47 utterly destroys it in every way.
Getting points to RENT weapons is terribly slow, the time to get several thousand points to rent anything for longer than a day for it can take many days-worth of real time with really good scores.
I played this open beta for about five hours (in one sitting), rented the third-tier assault rifle (G36) after one hour and I was unstoppable for the remaining four. I could wade through everybody (except other G36ers).
The game has no balance. Players run and jump around excessively in gunfights in the open.
The damage model makes it near-impossible to take out enemies without taking some hits unless you blindside them and get a lucky headshot before they can retaliate.
The design for renting guns fucks over players who don't play often.
The prices for guns, despite appearing cheap, cost a fortune due to the hideouly low income.
All pistols, SMGs, shotguns... anything that isn't an assault rifle is weak and outclassed.
And it is generic as fuck.
And the maps are ass.
And the last word in this sentence is italicized.
It isn't as bad as some free FPSes. I've only played the beta, so things may have changed since a month+ ago.
There are lots of shooters that are better than this.
Anybody up for some Skulltag? We could fight the demons.
Or just fight the demons in Diablo II as we have been.

RE: Free FPS Combat Arms
even after playing tonight i think this game is pretty good for a free online fps. You can choose from any number of weapons and they dont last forever. Yes the maps are cheesy and the balance of the game is off, i enjoyed it.

RE: Free FPS Combat Arms
It has changed since Beta, but instead of Rainbow Six-ish weapons, it is now Counterstrike weapons with the same Enemy Territory combat.
Weapons are balanced in the way that it doesn't really matter what weapon you use; the differences are negnigable.
Headshots are even easier to get now and players will run and jump and frolic in the open while they spray bullets at head level.
The chance at surviving unscathed is much higher, now that the average fight lasts two seconds.
Cash comes in several times more than it used to, and prices of weapons have changed drastically, much lower, mostly.
Shotguns seem to be okay, but SMGs and pistols are still wastes of weapon slots.
These changes have made the game even more generic but an okay game.
And the maps still suck.
