Next MMO

Post by penguin »

well.. with AoC sorta taking a rather large flop out of the gates, and looking like it needs a few more months of beta testing with the "fixes".. anybody been reading about any other newer MMOs that are coming out that i can follow for the next 5 years just to find out it sucks? Warhammer comes out in a few days i guess.. but it just looks terrible.
people say that graphics dont make the game.. but when they look like they should have been released back when warcraft came out (dwarves and orcs? WTF).. just doesnt strike me as something to purchase and play

the next warcraft expansion will be out shortly.. but to be honest going back to that same all grind of autoattack crap just doesnt appeal to me... what the hell am i suppose to do with myself while age of conan gets fixed.. AND even when it gets fixed half the people that left wont even be coming back, which means it'll be 2-3 guilds in a server that are sieging back and forth because it takes 48 people per side to do it..

Warhammer is something I'd try in an Open Beta, but it's had a huge amount of its scope cut, so I'm not expecting it will do too well.

Star Trek Online has my curiousity peaked especially since Cryptic has it now and I really liked City of Heroes. It's still too early to tell if it'll be any good though.

APB and The Agency also sound interesting in concept, but one is by a developer that seems like they may have bit off more than they can chew (APB) and the other is by a developer/publisher combo that always screws up their MMO offerings (read: SOE).

I'm sure there are others primed to come out soon, but those are the only ones I can say I'm "kind of" watching....

The Agency is interesting for the fact that it won't have a monthly fee, it isn't the redundant medieval/bronze/sword/sorcery junk, and it actually has a shootan skill element instead of the dull auto-attack skill-use monotinony.

If Star Trek Online goes the same way with alternative pay, I'm gonna be the Ensign who gets melted in an acid pit or eaten by a giant plant or axed by Abraham Lincoln.

Hell, I'm gonna play Phantasy Star Online (Schthack).

Don't bother with Warhammer. It looks and feels dated.

I agree with Funcom dropping the ball with AoC. I haven't really been following other games, just tidbits here and there. I'm keeping my eyes on DC Universe Online, I liked City of Heroes so I wouldn't mind trying another super hero MMO.

I'm still somewhat interested in Huxley, simply because I like the concept of a FPS/MMO. There hasn't been a ton of information on the game lately, but it could be fun.

Star Trek and Stargate... never followed either TV show, but if the games were fun, I'd play them.

I think I'm pretty much done with high fantasy sword/sorcery MMO's at this point....most of them have become far too derivative. I'll probably just go back to playing EVE full time as it's the only MMO that's really done PVP right IMO and they just released a spanky new expansion that I'd like to try out anyways. I'll still log into AoC for a bit since I'm subbed for a nother couple of months but we'll see where they are after that point.

It's like... Diablo II, with lasers, and in 3D, and... actually, a player skill requirement instead of throwing super magics at the enemy from a distance or letting skeletons fight for you.

C'mooooooon guyz! we could be all like "YARR!" and fly boats and shoot bats!

Heck, those of us who played Combat Arms for a few hours (after I told you it sucks) already have a Nexon account for this.

The games I am keeping aneye on are...

Star Wars (The new one)
Stargate Worlds
Star Trek Online
Darkfall
Aion

More than likely I will be playing Aion next and Darkfall is the game I am very hopefull will be the next big game. The other three are on a "we will see when they come out" kind of basis with me. Not gonna get my hopes up on any of em but I will try them out.

Still playing WoW and loving it. I suck I know.

I think I enjoy playing WoW because I am a "casual" player. 5-man here, 10-man there ... an occasional 25-man. Haven't even scratched the surface of what's available to see. PvP is deep and kicks ass I don't care what anyone says. :D

I honestly don't know why more of us don't play EVE. EVE is the best damn MMO I've ever seen, and the PvP is flat out amazing. I need to study up more on the politics of deep space and run with BadAsh and Poo more, it's such a deep frickin' game it really surprises me more people don't play.

Yeah with factional warfare out now I think I could get us PVP'ing within a few days if we really wanted to. All the factional warfare stuff is cruiser sized or smaller ships.

There is no "leveling" in EVE. Its a bit more complicated than that and yet rather easy.

You learn things by buying a skill training book and telling your character to simply learn a specific skill. Your character will learn that skill while you are playing or even...while you are NOT! You have 5 levels to every skill to learn. There are a lot of skills to learn. Each skill and each level of each skill has a certain amount of time it takes to learn it. It can be a few minutes or a hours...a few days...a few weeks or even a couple of months for the more advanced skills. The great thing again is you learn while you arent even playing. Leaving you to do whatever you want when you want. There is also the aspect of your "learning skills" and implants. How long it takes to learn skills is based on your attributes which can be changed using implants and learning skills that increase those attributes. The effect of attributes on how long it takes isn't great. You will see a difference in a bout maybe a week if you have a skillset that takes a few months to train. Keep in mind that you are going to have a lot of other things to train first that only take a few hours. You can get a good deepspace worth character in as little as a few months if you do it right. After that you figure out what you wanna do and plan it out. There are programs like EVEMON you can use to plan what you want to do with training and it will tell you the most efficient way to spend your time on your skills. You can also monitor your character while offline. Its all a little complicated but once you are in you will figure it out. There is a 14 day free trial and you can also use in game money to buy your playtime as well...the devs allow this as the timecodes you buy are still purchased from the site so they get thier money.

Just an FYI in EVE if you wanted to train all of the skills in the game to max level (level 5) it would take over 22 realtime years, assuming they don't add any more skills to the game in that time. Essentially that means you just need to train the skills you need/want and don't worry about the rest and also that you can constantly be improving and advancing your skills. Kinda one of the things I like about the game.
