New PC

Well I have been going back and forth on building a new PC, seeing I built this one about 6yrs ago, and its a "little" out dated. LOL. The only problem is that I have fallen so far behind on what is out there. So I am looking for some advice. Nothing to pricey, maybe middle of the road. Something that will play COD4 atleast. I have owned it since it came out and have had to piece together 2 different PC's that I have just to play the single player. Would like to maybe pick up a combo deal from Newegg or somthing. So let me know what ya think.


Also, do you mean to tell me that without the proper procesor, COD4 will not load? (my spelling sucks)

Firstly, get Google Chrome, the browser automatically spell checks everything (although I have just noticed how Google is not in its dictionary, lol?). Anyway, as for new PC, I don't really know how much is mid-range in US, but I would go for something like this....

Generally the higher the numbers the better. Though that will be able to run anything you throw at it for under $600.

I built my system a few months back and spent less than $500 (After Rebates). I can play L4D, COD4, Crysis and about anything else with everything cranked. I normally have at least 1 if not 2 virtual machines with XP Pro that run my day to day apps going at the same time.

Do you have any preference of AMD or Intel? I went back to AMD this last build and I don't regret it at all. I am waiting for the i7 stuff to become more mainstream and cheaper before I consider Intel. I like to weight the price vs. performance. Lets see if this post sparks any conversations.

FYI: Firefox has a built-in spell checker also......

OK, 2 things I forgot to mention.

1) I want to stay with AMD
2) I want to stay with Nvidia for a vid card

Sit down, Pinky.... There is nothing wrong w/ AMD or NVidia. Most of my systems are AMD and frankly given the number of problems I've had in the past with ATI, I'll always go for an Nvidia card as long as it isn't price prohibitive.

Speaking of which, make sure you are checking out the deal sites like SlickDeals.net and TechBargains.com. You can usually find some decent deals by looking on there. They currently have some combos on an AMD Quad-core and one other component listed from ZipZoomFly. Might not be the "best" deal, but it isn't bad either.

You, of course, have to figure out your budget and requirements though.

Maybe, though ATi crossfire actually works well, compared to nVidia, and nVidia whine and bitch to much for me to respect them as a company.

As for AMD I like them as a company, but they are quite behind on benchmarks compared to Intel.

Anyway, thats my 2 cents

I really like the Phenom II X4 940. It's $189 and it screams. I do not own one, but I like to read up on this stuff and it gets rave reviews.

The intel i7 920 is probably the top of the heap for its cost/performance ratio but is $279. I've read that you can OC the daylights out of these chips on air, but some people do not want to overclock.

Just my 2 cents, but if I were to build a PC with an eye on value, I would probably end up with something like this:

- AMD Phenom II X4 940 ($189)
- AM3 Mobo with 4GB DDR2 ($180)
- EVGA GTX 260 ($169)
