Completely Lost

Post by Dr.Death »

Hey guys, I am stuck with a computer issue. A friend of mine got his hands on an HP Workstation XW8000. He asked me to get it going for him and I have tried. It does not find any HD's. I have spent countless hours on the net trying to figure this out and I have not been able to do it. I have nothing but the tower, no disks, no nothing. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get this dam thing going? Thanks!

What OS are you loading? Sometimes an older disc of XP (and BIOS) do not see the HD until you hit F6 and fire up the controller's drivers. If there is no HD, slap one in there and you should be good to go.

Here is a link to overall specs....

When you say no nothing what do you mean? Do you have memory, cpu, cd/dvd drive?

The tech sheet says this about drives:
Integrated Ultra320 SCSI hard drives (10,000 or 15,000 rpm) and Ultra ATA/100 hard drives (7200 rpm) or optional Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200 rpm or 10,000 rpm)

You should at a minimum be able to connect an old IDE hard drive.

Here is a link to the drivers for this system:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/Te ... t=Go%20%BB

The memory looks like it has to be REGISTERED so off the shelf desktop memory may not work.

As XOR stated you may need to get the TEXT MODE driver for the install of disk on the SCSI controller in the system. Since the latest OS listed is XP I would assume that Windows Vista or Windows 7 should have the drivers included.

If you provide more information I can try to help further.

Ok, I am trying to put on XP. It actually has 3 of Ultra320 SCSI (15,00rpm) Drives. I tried hitting F6 to load the drivers and it ask for a floppy with the drivers on it. I thought I found the drivers and put then on a disk, but when I try to load it says "can't find txtsetup.oem". I tried renaming the file to this and it still did not work. I thought about Vista or Windows &, but am not sure teh guy wants to spen the money on either of them right now.

I.D.O, that link is where I got the drivers from origianlly that did not work. I don't know, maybe I got the wrong ones.

When the system POSTs does it show the SCSI adapter as a Adaptec SCSI RAID 2120S??

Both of the Adaptec SCSI RAID 2120S Controller Drivers links on that page include a txtsetup.oem file. Make sure that the files are copied correctly to the root of the floppy disk.

There is a note about the controller firmware level required with the SP32764.exe.

Let me know if that helps.

Ok I.D.O, I figured out what I was doing wrong. I never exracted the files after downloading them. I was saving to disk, duh. Now, after I press F6, it does its thing and is says Windows has the drivers. I continue on and its still not finding any HD's. I read the note about the firmware level and tried to update that. I made the 2 disks like it says and when I boot to dos and try to flash it tells me " if you are flashing for the firts time put jumpers on J6 of the card and continue then remove jumpers when finished"? I continue and and I get "no know controllers detected, quitting". Ther are jumpers there but not sure what exactly they are talking about in this scenerio. I did Google this about the jumpers, its all a different language to me.
