I can has computer problem?

Post by Ayyyla »

Hey guys! Long time no see! Hope everyone's doin good.

I have a computer question. You may recall some time ago I was having this issue with my new rig sometimes refusing to start up. All the fans would whir and whatnot but the monitor (or any monitor) would not power up.

I'm still having a problem like that periodically. When it does that, I can usually switch the ram around to different slots or just put one stick in and then it will start up and run fine. I can then turn it off and put both back in and it will recognize both.

So uh, what's the deal with that? I've replaced the ram 1x already so this is brand new ram - which makes me think something is up with the mother board.

In other news Time Warner Cable can bite me...over the last week I get so much latency in the evening that WOW isn't playable :( QQ Anyone know who I screw/have killed to get that fixed :D

Yeah. Definitely seems like a mobo issue. You should be able to get that swapped out w/o having to worry about reloading.

On your cable issue:
1) Are you connected via a wired or wireless connection?
2) Even if you are wired, are you using a wireless router?
3) Is it only with WoW or everything? Try running Speedtest.net during the day when everything seems fine and at night when everything seems laggy. See if your results correlate.

Oh, and quit being such a stranger...

ive had some really strange problems in the past with my computer not wanting to startup... 1 ended up being a power supply issue (not enough juice!) and then! i wasnt able to get enough draw from my powerstrip... pluggin in directly to the wall fixed it

What mobo do you have? I know that EVGA mobos have a BIOS issue with Samsung HDD. Mine wont post if I have my HDD in with more than 1 optical drive :S

Arch, I knew that but I was hoping it would be something else because I hate the idea of having to send the motherboard away and waiting on it's replacement. Alas...

Cable - well, it's plugged in via cable but the router does have wireless capability. I don't really have any other online games installed right now to test whether it is just WoW in that sense, but I already ran a speed test while playing WoW the other day. Upload/download was great - but WoW was still suckballs latency.

There's a forum with more than 25 pages of people with TWC in the southeast that are having trouble with bad latency. Basically Blizzard's response is to talk to your ISP. My ISP's response is to say that unless a bunch more people complain they won't do anything about it and "it's probably Blizzard's servers."

If it has wireless capabilities and you aren't using it, disable it. Otherwise, you may have people leeching which would add to your problems. If you are using wireless, make sure it's locked down.

Also, it could be the power supply, but I'm sticking w/ mobo.

So, my computer started doing the whirring but no power up thing again. This time I sent the motherboard to Asus. I just unwrapped a fresh motherboard and plugged all the crap back in and started it up...well I tried to start it up. It's STILL doing that no start up the computer thing.

To recap from before: Power supply is new and plenty to run this thing and another thing just like it. Motherboard is brand new. CMOS battery was brand new. I sent the ram back to Cosair and got new ram. The video card works on other computers and the monitor works on other computers. I'm at a complete loss and Thowarr isn't here to help me troubleshoot. I have no idea what else to freakin do with this thing. I've tried the usual pop the ram in different slots, only use one stick, tricks and that doesn't fly this time.

I wish all the computer people I knew didn't live in Canada or damned close (or otherwise too far away to do me any good).

Pretty much the only part left that could be causing the issue is the processor. Processors have been known to work intermittantly, so it would make sense that it would sometimes work just fine for quite a while before it really kicked the bucket. The thermal goo was dried up and I remember intially thinking my vid card was overheating because things seemed to work again when it "cooled down." Of course, I have had a vid card overheat so I could just be paranoid.

In any event, it's just about the only thing I haven't replaced and it's still under warranty so I contacted Intel and I'm shipping this thing back to them. If THIS doesn't fix it...then I'm really totally clueless.

Ouch Ayyla. I feel your pain here. I hate it when stuff like that happens.

Do you normally get a single "beep" when the PC turns on? The reason I ask is to see if you have your PC speaker hooked up, or if you have a beeper on the mobo.

A CPU that goes bad (along with video and memory) will kick out a beep (POST) pattern.

If you have a PC speaker (beeps), and the computer will not turn on, AND no beeps ... it unfortunately may be the mobo again, or something is holding it down.

If this is the case, try removing all peripherals like network cards, sounds cards, modems etc... and let it turn on with just the video card, 1xHD, 1xRAM and CPU - nothing else (heater, stick and keys as I like to say)

Hang in there!

Other thing it might be is a grounding issue (i had that). Only way to test that is to place the mobo with the components on a cardboard box outside of the pc enclosure.

Hope that helps

I had a friends system that was the same way. All of a sudden it stopped working. After looking at it for about 20 minutes I noticed the reset button on the case was stuck half way in. I disconnected the reset wires from the motherboard and it started fine. Popped the reset button back to the normal position, reconnected the wires and everything returned to normal.

Just something else to look at.

Xor: Uh...hmm. Well, I currently have the processor out because I was going to go ahead and send it in so they can replace it just in case. And I can't remember about the beeping exactly.

I know the mother board beeped when the video card wasn't all the way pushed in when I was fiddling with things. So I guess what you are saying is that it should have beeped like that if the CPU was bad...and it didn't. So hmm.

Someone else said it sounded like the power supply. I know it's the right kind and good enough and blah blah but it's under warranty too so I was considering sending it back next. I've kind of just left it sitting here for the time being because I was tired of messing with the dammit thing and it's the holidays but things like my resume and crap I need to teach my college classes are on it so I kind of need to fix it at some point here. Meh.

Pink - hmm I was pretty sure it was grounded okay but when I get the processor back if it still doesn't work I'll give that a shot.

IDO - I'll try that too. Man if it turned out to be something that simple...and here I've spent weeks sending crap back...grrrr.

I got the new processor installed. No go. I did the thing with the reset whatsit IDO and that didn't make a difference.

No beeping at all, purrs like a kitten - just doesn't want to boot up.

Blarg. I'm really tired of playing with it. I want my computer back. Waaaaah.
