XOR from the posting I get the impression that if you go out and buy the HL2 w/multiplayer and don't pay the monthly fee then you have to go out and actually buy all mods/expansions in a store instead of getting them as a payed update.

it kind of astounds me that people are upset with pay to play.

a movie = 5-10 dollars for 2 hours of entertainment

a sporting event = 20-ungodly dollars for 2-4 hours of entertainment

cable tv = 25+ dollars per month for whatever you watch

so 15 dollars a month for swg, if I play 3.5 hours a week, that is 14 hours a month, that is about a dollar an hour for entertainment, that is a steal!

Lets also note that you can get live customer support in game around the clock, they are adding items and content, they are making and expansion (that you will pay one time for, but the monthly rate will remain the same).

They run the servers, they do support... hell I think it is a great deal. I play average probably 3 hours a night which is 21 hours a week, that is about 84 hours a month... umm 15 bucks? lol i pay pennies per hour to have my fun.

well worth the cost to play such an expansive game.

This is a new PHX tradition I believe, calling Yaz a homo then letting him get all steamed up about it.

Merc's just broke, that's why. Adults with bills make the games, and kids that are broke demand the Adults with bills to waste their time making a game they want for nothing.

Something like that?

Good to hear from you Nasty!!!

In regards to the pricing policy we will need to wait until it is actually available from Valve\Activision. Until then I think that everyone (gossip boards) are talking out their ASS. But I am pretty good at it. The way I understand the gossip pricing structure is the following:

Single Player (No Multiplayer) Boxed Copy Only / No download

Single Player / Mulitplayer - Boxed Copy Only.
Use of steam for the following:
Logging into play online (Like a registration server) could help with catching and banning cheater/hackers. (FREE)
Download updates (bugfixes only for Half-Life2 = FREE)
Other content such as game trailers, demos, etc. (FREE)

Single Player / Mulitplayer - Subscription Only NO BOXED COPY
Use of steam for the following:
Logging into play online (Like a registration server) could help with catching and banning cheater/hackers. (FREE)
Download updates (bugfixes only for Half-Life2 = FREE)
Other content such as game trailers, demos, etc. (FREE)
Additions:
Download Mods via Steam vs downloading via a website/ftp. Some mods only available via Steam
Access to download and play at no extra charge (via Steam) Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike 2, Day of Defeat 2. At this time I believe these games are considered stand-alone games NOT MODS and will be available as retail boxed copies at $50+ each or free for Subscribers.

Just as a note if you pay your $10 for the first month, download the software and cancel the copy will not work after the month is up.

OK now this is where I am stuck and I thinking about which way to go. I have never been a fan of PAY TO PLAY. And yes Yaz I get your point and agree. But lets take Starcraft for example. Paid $35 StarCraft + $25 Broodwar and played it for many – many - too many hours from 1998 - today. Played on Blizzard’s servers, many LAN parties, me vs the computers on plane flights and the single player. I think that is what a lot of gamers are used to and still have as a mentality.

OK, back to me and what I am thinking…..

Go to the store pay $50 and own the game. Never pay another dime until Team Fortress 2 $50+ and/or Counter-Strike 2 $50+ (the game I am really waiting for) and maybe Day of Defeat 2 $50+.
Worst case for a retail scenario $200 but the more than likely scenario $100. Or do the monthly thing of $10 and have access to all the titles as they are released. I will need to play for 10 to 20 months before I am paying more by subscription than if I purchased retail. For me to benefit from this scenario Valve needs to release the titles at a descent pace.

Ahhhh what a pickle….. Hate the thought of Pay to Play but the numbers look like subscription could be a better deal. Then again my life is a soap opera full of these kinds of high power, life changing decisions. Your thoughts??

Very well written IDO, and your example of StarCraft got me thinking.

First person shooters and Real time strategy games couldn't possibly require the maintenece of a large MMORPG, therefore $10/month is probably overboard.

The only FPS I know of thats pay to play is PlanetSide, and we all know how well that's doing. A RTS game I can't see being pay to play anytime soon.

HalfLife2 is the guinnea pig in this new realm, so I'm sure if Valve can't pull it off, no one will.

As far as games like SWG, I'm more than happy to pay to play.

It all boils down to your value as a consumer.

Not a shock but here is an official comment from Valve:

The previously announced September 30th release date for Half-Life 2 is being pushed back. We are currently targeting a holiday release, but do not have a specific "in-store" date to share at this time. We will release that information as soon as we have confirmed a new date.
