This sucks. I have travelled througout the US and have run into a large number of people. All of which have been very nice. We live in a time that instead of drawing bigger lines like we have been in this thread, we should be erasing some of those lines. If we really looked at each other, (our lifestyles, they way we think, policies, etc...) we are not that much different. Just details. Even Iraq. The common person there really isn't that much different. Lets not compare who is better or who kicks more ass in war. Are those things really that important? When it all comes down to it, the friends we make and how we treat each other globally is all that matters. It sucks when people sqabble about this kinda crap. This sucks. I like people. End of story where they are from, how much money they have, what they eat, who they worship doesn't matter.

I am sure that the American people are fully capable of determining who best to run they're nation. Good luck.

good call mr cooler

but lets get serious..... all that really matters in any type of international competition is HOCKEY!
and, lo and behold, Canada hold all international title: Olympic gold medalists (even women!), World Cup Chamions, IIHF World Champions, World Junior Champions, and i do believe that team Pacific (British Columbia and Alberta) holds the Under 17 championship, as well as an Ontario team holding the Under 18 title.
BUT WAIT you say? Canada clearly licks balls in international competition: look at the olympics you biased fool!!!!
And to this i say........

umm.......

ahhh......

we won the 100 meters a while ago??? does that count?

No, I don't know a lot about Canada besides it being cold and I have cold urticaria so I could never live there. But does that make me dumb? I don't think so. I know a lot of things that I'm sure you all do not. I mean, I don't know anything about landscaping or nursery working but does that mean I can't appreciate a well-kept yard or a burgeoning houseplant? No, it simply means I kill all my houseplants. I don't know a lot about Canada so that makes me selfish? No, there's a lot I don't know about America too.
HOUSEPLANT MURDERER!!!!

I think a lot of the problem comes from the U.S. Media. After watching stations like FOX and CNN for awhile, watching newscasts from other countries is 100x more informative, U.S. stations love to take the 3 or 4 major stories they have and repeat the same shit ad infinium, and very rarely does this news involve anything other than american interests. This presents a very generalized and narrow view of the world at large and I believe will prove more dangerous to the U.S. the longer it continues. Funny as it may seem to be to compare the two, in the long run it could become much like the information minister in iraq spewing crap about iraq defeating the U.S. while the us troops were basically standing accross the street watching.

1) The US lost the War of 1812.

2) The White House wasn't white until after it was burned by the Canadians in retaliation for our burning of York (Toronto).

Just curious - don't want to be limited to the potentially-biased American sources, so if you have others, I'd be happy to see them.

Bah comon Arch don't tell me you are seriously asking me this? Are you guys really not taught about the Canadian army burning down the white house and the reason it's called the "white house" is because it was painted white to cover the damage after repairs?

Also the war of 1812 is hard to explain to Americans. History books are vastly different on that war when you compare American ones to the rest of the world.

The war of 1812 the US wanted to take over Canada. Sure they broke from Britain, AFTER the fact that Canada was unable to be captured. Canada didn't beat the US on their own obviously, Britain helped the whole time.

I have seen some US history books and it makes you chuckle, so I know why you're asking those questions. They very rarely even mention the attack on Canada and that it was a complete loss.. and the burning of the white house is even seldom seen. Although if you read some non-US text you get the full story.

Don't get me wrong, once the US changed the main objective.. to break from Britain instead of taking over Canada, I would call that a victory.. although the initial cause was lost.

Also you mentioned outsourcing due to it being cheap. If you re-read my post I mentioned nothing about India, because I know its cheap crap grunt-work labor. I was talking solely on the basis of outsourcing to Canada, which I have very in-depth knowledge with.

This is where the problem stems though Cooler. I mean sure in Canada we have this attitude, but compare it to the average American attitude of "my SuV has 3lb more of torque!", "my house is 1 sq foot bigger", "i have more money!", etc. I am not in any way saying that all Americans are like that.. so don't take it the wrong way.. just that there is a HUGE number of them that are, and they are the loud ones.

I mean earlier it was mentioned that people from Canada are lured to the US for higher pay, lower taxes, etc. That is completely true! For people that only want money and possessions all the power to them. That is all I ever hear in an argument with the US.. power this.. power that.. just read the thread. Whereas in Canada I could care less how much power we have, or military size.. it's about my free healthcare system taking care of everyone, the pension system that makes the US one look like a joke, the social programs that are free. I value quality of life over quantity of possessions.. I'm not saying that it's the right way, just that it's different.

The fact is that I can leave my house with the doors unlocked and not think twice.. I could go on a week vacation and leave them that way. I don't need weapons because I know that nobody with one will break in.. hell I know there is a miniscule chance anybody would ever break in. I can leave my house at 2-4am and walk around without any worries.. anywhere I want. I'll take the quality of life like that over anything you could possibly offer me.

1) I knew about the burning down of the White House. The fact of the matter is that when Thomas Jefferson designed the building, it was white. So painting it white after being burned may have been symbolic, but it was white prior.

2) I am aware of our attempt to invade British colonies in Canada due to the concern of an invasion by the Brits. Wouldn't you if there were a bunch of enemy soldiers standing on the other side, knowing an attack was imminent? Whether conquest or protection was the motive is for historians to theorize. I do know that the British command over the Canadian colonies signed a peace treaty that they initiated with the US. Most armies don't say "We're winning! We're winning! Let's ask for a peace treaty!"

3) Um, I do believe we broke from Britain in the Revolutionary war in 1776....may need to go check our biased US History Books, but I'm pretty sure that's what I read.

4) As many outsourcing reports show, there is only one reason to oursource and that's money. Fact of the matter is, Canadian IT Shops charge less than the cost of US IT Professionals and the associated benefits. Maybe we're overpaid in comparison to the world market, but make no doubt about it - outsourcing = cheaper labor, comparable quality.

Outsourcing #'s -> Less than 10% of jobs outsourced from the US and the UK (the two top Outsourcing countries) went to Canada.

Cooler - I agree with you. I'm gonna shut up about this whole thing because in the end, it doesn't matter. Nothing good will come from me continuing this discussion personally.

Thanks!

a few comments and then I am done

1) gordon sinclare is one of canada's most aplauded radio commentators from the 60's on

2) I dont argue with a canadian about american politics for no other reason than there is no net gain if I convince them of something because they cant vote

3) I am not insulting any members with my canadian comments, I judge people, not countries

4) I am not going to get into a canadian bashing mode, it is too easy. Just leave it to say that the only reason they do not have any major effect on the world (economy, humanitarian aid, militarily) is because the country does not have the economic muscles to have any major effect, hence we dont bash them for things they have done to the world.

5) arguing politics online is like competing in the special olympics, even if you win you are retarded... with that said .... I give up
