Last night the server was FULL at one point, and it's also a west coast server so when I finally got on later on my ping was double that of some of the other servers.
Since it was full Brandy and I started characters on Nektolus to learn the game, we played as a Priest / Mage combo and it went really well.. not a single death!
I think the only thing this game has in common with EQ1 are some races, places, and con colors.. thats about it. Finally a real second generation MMO.. not just another horrid 'frist one to grind to 50 gets a prize and can reroll and do it again!' like the rest of the games out and ones coming out. I didn't even look at my xp bar ONCE all night.. it was just insane fun running around doing quests and exploring.
An easy way to tell it's a next gen is because both Brandy and I said we would play the game even if it was a single player game, the voice, quests, and combat are insane.

Oh I won't bash Warcraft, I mean its a great game too as I tried with the beta briefly.. I just didn't want to play the same thing again. Both games cater to different players and are different generation games imo.Archangelus wrote:I sure hope you aren't lumping WoW in your "like the rest of the games out and ones coming out"......
I mean people could rant and rave about how warcraft is different than others, but in the end it comes to it being the same thing over again. What do you do as soon as you log in for the first time? Level. Why? To get to the highest level. Why? Either just to be the highest, or to PvP. Now there's nothing wrong with that, I mean there are tons of players that want to play a game like that.
EQ2 is wierd.. I never thought I would play an EQ game after trying out EQ1 for the few months we played it. I think all future MMOs are going to be based off the EQ2 model of things, as it's actually the first one I would call a second generation.
Put it this way.. I didn't look at my level once, I didn't know what level I was until lunch when somebody asked me and I checked online. I mean EQ2 could be loaded up and you would have fun if it was only a singleplayer game, which I think is just awesome. When I tried out WoW it was just the same thing over again.. although it has a lot of improvements obviously. I mean WoW is basically AC + DAoC + EQ and you grind away getting xp until you max out and start again. As I said there is nothing wrong with that, it's proven (you can check out one of the latest gamastura articles on it) that players actually want this grind and enjoy it.
I guess I just played the gen1 games for too long.. I mean it's been about 6 years now. And yeah I know a few of you guys can say the same thing or more, but the fact is that they are pretty much the only games I played over that time whereas everyone else played different ones like rts, fps, etc.
EQ2 is just a breathe of fresh air right now.. it's actually an RPG instead of whack-a-mole. I mean if I want to play a game for PvP it would be Shadowbane or UO on SP. It sucks because nothing yet comes close to those two at all, and Shadowbane was released and still is too buggy, and UO is just too old, but the companies with all the money won't bank on all out PvP/siege/warfare games because the MMO masses don't want PvP, which really sucks.
Then again I only game for an hour or so a day if I'm lucky now, which is the reason I wanted an RPG MMO instead of a competitive one. I'm just too busy with coding to actively compete and keep up.

I wasn't trying to bash EQ2 either (I haven't played it, so I couldn't speak authoritatively). My only point is that I think you misjudge players of WoW. I don't focus on leveling when I play. I'm drawn in by the quests and the content that is provided. The only advantage or necessity brought on by leveling is accessing higher content (well, viably - w/o getting waxed by the first mob). I agree with your point though. UO was grind your skills to a template, w/o any enjoyable aspect to it at all. In these new games (WoW,EQ2, CoH), they provide an excellent method which in the end, is just masking your grind. They make it enjoyable and provide a point, not a race to see who is the 733t35t d00d on the server......

Oh I hear ya I never thought you were, I just wanted to make sure people knew I'm not bashing WoW at all.Archangelus wrote:I wasn't trying to bash EQ2 either (I haven't played it, so I couldn't speak authoritatively).
What I know is just from message boards and people I know that have tried it etc. I mean there are a couple friends that if we're talking about what everyone has been up to it will be 'Yeah i've been playing WoW beta.. I'm almost level (insert level here)' and then the conversation goes on talking about leveling and how great it will be when they are max level and PvPing. My only point is that I think you misjudge players of WoW. I don't focus on leveling when I play. I'm drawn in by the quests and the content that is provided.
Plus if I were to ever play WoW it would only be on a PvP server obviously, because PvE-wise you would just play EQ2, that is what it was designed for. And once you're playing on a PvP server you do grind to the top as much and as fast as you can. I played on AC:Darktide for a long time, along with even EQ1 PvP server, Shadowbane, etc.. and it was always about getting max level/gear so you could PvP.
Well it really all depends. I mean I believe all of those listed 'mask your grind' other than EQ2.. but maybe it's just us playing it. I mean in EQ2 I couldn't care less what level I am, etc.. there is no PvP competition, etc. I could spend a week getting to level 10 and I couldn't care less. The other two games you basically need to grind up to have fun. I mean honestly you can't tell me the 'Go kill 10 of these mobs and bring me the remains' way of leveling in WoW while there are 50 other people doing the same thing are any different than normal grinding. In these new games (WoW,EQ2, CoH), they provide an excellent method which in the end, is just masking your grind.
I dunno.. the whole time logged into WoW and also hearing people here talk about it the game was all about getting levels and loot so you can PvP. I mean that is not a bad thing at all, I just feel like playing more of an RPG over competitive game right now.. I just don't have time to keep up.They make it enjoyable and provide a point, not a race to see who is the 733t35t d00d on the server......
All in all I don't mean that either game is 'better' or one is 'crap' or anything like that. I mean everybody likes different things, and if that weren't the case we would all be playing the same game
I will say however that they are vastly different games, with EQ2 concentrating on the world and the way to 50, whereas in Blizzard's own words the end-game is PvP, and so like camelot the game basically starts at the higher levels. Nothing wrong with either way at all imo, it lets people that want to play an RPG style game have one, and people that want to play a competitive game style have one. I actually think it's better this way than if the two games had been similar and competing against each other.
