Thinking of Upgrading!
Well I'm thinking about upgrading my MB and Processor and am looking for some feedback. I would like to stay with AMD for a procesor and maybe Asus for MB but am open to suggestions so post away!

heh heh, personally ive gone with many diff boards and types of procs, but i always went with what was bundled together on sale and onle thing i had to worry about was did i want ddr ram, did i want it to be a certain front side buss speed, i like AMD cause of the bang for the buck, but have sometimes found P4 w/ hyperthreading for same price on sale, so look around and dont be tied down with a certain name like asus although they are top of the line, try to get one that is 8X agp but doesnt have to be if you get a good deal on 4x, not sure any of the games you play take full need of 8x anyways, just make sure you know what kind of ram can and cannot work on the mobo
Ultra's right, make sure your old RAM is supported if you don't upgrade that as well.
With a million combos to pull from, I'll just tell you what I have had for the last 4+ months and absolutely couldn't be happier.
Athlon 64 3500+ ( $269.00 newegg -- get the Winchester )
Abit AV8 ( $134.00 newegg or the newer E version for $169.00 -- probably best to go with the latter )
-and
2 GB Corsair TWINX3200XL RAM
Very very happy with the performance.

Good luck Death, let us know what you get!

Well for the last 2 or 3 years I've been running the AMD XP 2200, Asus A7N8X (non deluxe) with 756 megs of PC3200 or DDR400. I was extremely happy with it when I bought it and am still very happy with it but have noticed a slow down as time goes on. Like Ultra, I also buy the combos, but I buy mine at PC shows. I think I paid around 240 for my MB and processor 2 or 3 years ago. As far as the Athalon 64 goes Xor, I was still thinking that was more than I needed and is a little to pricey for me right now. I do love newegg though, its saved in my favorites. Thanks for the input and I'll let you kow what I decide.

Well i know you watching your cost on this Death so i can input some helpful info you.
It will costa little more for the additions to it but the thing to get is the new PCI-Express boards ( your old video card will not work on it ), but man the boost is worth the extra 50.00 more for the board/cpu combo the cards you can pick up somewhere between 80.00 to 600.00 depending on your preference. your current memory is compatable. As far as amd goes i would stay with the Asus boards and get the board that supprots the Nvidia 3 chip set. I hate VIA chips sets. another good board that i like alot is FoxConn and giga-byte.

I'm going to agree with Mid here on the PCI-Express video card option. When we built our new gaming computer, we chose a board with PCI-e, combined with GeForce 6600gt and this kicks ass. The increased detail and resolution on my games is incredible.
I wish I could offer more in the way of, this chipset is better vs this one, but I don't know much about these things; still learning. I talked a good deal to both Arch and Mid, and they didn't guide me wrong
The place where I bought all my stuff seemed to have the lowest prices on everything, or close too, and they had free 2nd day air shipping. www.zipzoomfly.com

Careful,
If $269 is too much right now for a processor, then getting a motherboard with PCI-Express is gonna strap you even further, as you will need to buy a new video card that supports PCIe. But if you're planning on upgrading your video card anyway, then definately go for PCIe.
Keep in mind the performance gains for a single card solution using PCIe is nominal at the moment.
A 8x 6800GT scores roughly 4500 3Dmark2005 (A64 3500+)
A PCI-E 6800GT scores roughly 4550 3Dmark2005 (A64 3500+)
Unless you play with 8x antialiasing and 1600x1200, PCIe for now is more than you need (considering your statement saying an Athlon 64 was too much)
Save your money for a good processor (I stand behind the Athlon64 3500+ as the best for your money at the moment, and it is not overkill by any means) and mobo. When the time comes to upgrade your video card, then most definately go with PCIe combo.
