Try holding down the right mouse button and moving left and right. That's how I do it while I'm holding 'W' down to move forward.

To use your mouse as a steering control, hold down the right button first, then hold down the left button. This will allow you to "drive/ steer" your character using the mouse. Also, as Arch said, hold down the right button and use the keyboard buttons. The only time I need to use the mouse to steer is when I PvP and I need to move quickly. Otherwise with mobs I just use the keyboard.

Although, I did just pick up a Nostromo keypad (from Belkin) and all I can say is HOLY CRAP!! I so wish I had one 6 months ago. You use this in combination with your mouse. I have to say, I'm really surprised with how intuitive it is, plus seeing as how I have short stubby fingers, I can still reach all of the keys much much better than I can on a keyboard. Aylah got one too and she's still learning to use it. We figure it'll help with the new COD2 by having all of our quick key buttons a finger tip away.
