Video Cards
Hey Guys,
Do all computers have an AGP and a PCI slot for video cards? What I mean is can most computers use both?
Thanks,
Cooler

RE: Video Cards
Older computers will just be able to use AGP. i know mine (only 2 months old) can only use PCI. So depends

RE: Video Cards
Probably not. A motherboard will either have an AGP slot or a PCI-Express slot for the video card. If you're looking into getting a new card, I highly recommend going PCI-Express. AGP is really outdated and I'd be surprised if you could run any of the newer games. Just make sure your motherboard has an available slot.

RE: Video Cards
sorry to say this but you can get motherboards with agp/pci-express on them at the same time. Also you cna buy an NVidia 8800 GTX AGP video card, so what your saying is wrong. also Cooloer you are saying agp/pci and not agi/pci-express so which is it..

RE: Video Cards
OK, that's why I said probably not to cover my ass lol. That is actually very surprising. I thought they discontinued making AGP video cards because PCI-Express is so much better.
*EDIT* I just checked TigerDirect and Newegg... there is nothing higher than a 7900 GS for AGP. I'd like to know where you've seen a 8800 AGP.

The power supply can also be a factor since many newer video cards ask for additional power.
Then you get to ask yourself what could be affected by a new motherboard.
-RAM (DDR vs DDR 2; clockspeed)
-HDD (IDE vs SATA)
-CPU (Socket 754, 939, A, AM2??)
Just some examples....
I'd find out what motherboard you have to identify AGP or PCI-Express. Then I'd assume that you may need to include a 450W PS with your purchase of a new video card.

I have a question along these lines too so why start a newthread
I've got a radeon 9550 with 512 mb and my comp has a gig and a half of ram but my comp still has trouble running bf 2142 on anything but low and isn't too great with eq2 I thought my card was ok but i guess not any suggestions on what I can do to try and make things run a little smoother other than buying a new graphics card
thanks

w/o buying a new card, about the best you can probably do is defrag your system, lower your resolution, and lower your in-game settings until you reach a state you are happy with.
If you could, i'd sell your current 9550 for $30-ish and use that money towards a X1950 ($125). You'll be fine for awhile with that card. Otherwise, I'd start with my previous suggestions.

Fimo If your card is a mouth breather like you are It's no wonder why it's alittle slow

well the funny thing is EQ2 and BF2142 were both engineered arounf nvidia cards and yur using an ATI so no wonder it can not us high settings or you get poor performance.
Buy a new low end card like the 7300gt or 8400 gt for $84.00 and have better luck buddy

The 9550 is an ancient card compared to the new ones. I believe it's not even fully dx9 compatable, which would explain the problems with EQ2 and BF2142. I had a 9700 vid card like 5+ years ago and that is part of the same generation of graphics card to give you an idea of how old it actually is. If you want to upgrade you card without having to upgrade your mobo I'd go with something like arch suggests, an x1950 or whatever the nvidia equivalent would be, probably the 7900. If they are only around $125 it's not that big of an investment and the performance improvement will be gigantic compared to your old card. You will have to watch your power supply though as you might run into trouble there.
