Black ops fixes

Post by z3r07w0 »

As some of you may find the game is very laggy. I agree its new and probably not tested enough before it was released, however, we have the ability to adjust all our settings. So, until we see a patch let me suggest a few fixes.

If your running more then one core(duel, quad etc) the game is only using one core to play which contributes to some of the lag. Locate your steam folder:
(/program files/steam/steam apps/ common/ black ops/ players folder) Inside the players folder you will find 2 .cfg files (one for single player and one for multiplayer). Open the .cfg file using note pad and look for multithread "0" and change it to "1". Save it. Single player .cfg will not have this multithread option so thats how you would tell them apart from each other.

Now, start a multiplayer game and bring up your console. Change your rate to 25000 if its not already (/rate 25000) Then change your cl_maxpackets "100" to "300" (/cl_maxpackets "300")

There are some additional fixes but i found these made a big difference. If you continue to have trouble try and dumb down your graphics this will also help. If anyone has any other suggestions please add to this thread.

I tried all of those and my rate was 25000 already

say my cl_maxpackets was only 30 though and changing it didn't seem to do anything.

I'm getting cpu spikes even in the menu's though so I think I'll just have to wait till they release a patch to fix it. I'm struggling through the mp at the moment though and doing ok.

Sorry my values for the max packets were not correct. Max is 30 not 300. I also found that if you remove the shadows and bullet impact that it does give you 6-10 more fps. As for the lag, I experience it as well, even when Im on the main menu screen.

Here is what i used have not had any lag problems since:

How can I improve my hit registration and general network performance?
cl_maxpackets 100
snaps 30

How can I remove the cap/limit on my maximum FPS?
com_maxfps 120

If your PC supports multi-threading:
seta r_multithreaded_device "1"
in config_mp.cfg (Steam\steamapps\common\call of duty black ops\players)

I didn`t use any of the below but they are suppose to help as well.

Misc. "potential" performance tweaks:
Run Steam in Offline mode > Start Black Ops > End the steam.exe process > Set BO process priority to high
/r_multiGpu - should be set to "0" if you do not have a multi-gpu graphics card.
/r_blur_allowed - people are reporting minor frame boosts with this set to "0"
/r_distortion - people are reporting minor frame boosts with this set to "0"
/r_dof_enable - people are reporting minor frame boosts with depth of field set to "0"
/r_glow_allowed - people are reporting huge frame boosts with this set to "0"
/cg_brass - people are reporting minor frame boosts with depth of field set to "0"
/r_cachemodellighting "1" - people are reporting minor frame boosts with depth of field set to "1"
/r_cacheSmodellighting "1" - people are reporting minor frame boosts with depth of field set to "1

Zero maxpackets should be set to 100. At 300 i was still getting lag.

Also be sure to disable Sync every Frame as this will also give a significant fps increase.

Thanks for those tips, they seem to help.

I have a weird issue. My issue is I completely freeze after playing for about 10-15 minutes.

It's not my PC that's locking, as I can CTRL-ALT-DEL my way out and see it in task manager as "Not Responding" and end task and all is fine again. My temps are well within the normal range.
There is no rhyme or reason that I can tell, it will just freeze with the sound stuck in a loop.

Pisses me off because I'm digging the game.

Well I installed Black Ops on my Win XP partition (same hardware) last night and I have not froze up once *knock*

Must be something with Win 7 and one of my drivers. :(

People have been having the same issue Xor. /they have chalked it up to having multiple sound drivers which cause a conflict in game. Many people are crashing over this issue. I suggest disabling sound card drivers on all sound devices except for your primary device. That should do it I'm sure.
