MW 3 or BF 3?
Re: MW 3 or BF 3?
i don't know if i can even play MW3 but i was born a FPS online because of vanilla CoD, so i'm sticking with my allegiance.
.. PHX - Riv3r ..
Re: MW 3 or BF 3?
Both. But I imagine everyone is going to gravitate to one or the other. We'll see.
Re: MW 3 or BF 3?
I think I'll gravitate towards Planetside 2... if it doesn't have a monthly fee.
The recent statement about the design of MW3's multiplayer maps has completely put me off.

Re: MW 3 or BF 3?
Really? I think them going away from all the verticality is a good thing. I enjoyed days like COD2 where there were lanes to fight in rather than every building having a cubby hole/multiple floors like it seems in MW2.
Re: MW 3 or BF 3?
Vacant, Crash, Wetwork, Strike, Ambush, Bloc, Bog, District, Crossfire, Downpour, Strike, Showdown? Each one of those maps, regardless of the gametype had virtually identical encounters EVERY time. Same location, same grenade spam over buildings at specific points, same eventual congregation of enemies at points of the map throughout the whole match, same everything. Their design was made up of narrow, flat lanes and isolated structures. The only way a spawn would shift is if one whole team moved out of their side of the map and cleared out the enemy.
The only COD4 maps that weren't extremely predictable were Pipeline and to a lesser extent Overgrown and Broadcast. They were large, had structures with multiple levels, a fair amount of cover/concealment and numerous entries and routes to just about any location.
They were maps you could both roam around and flank enemies but were still able to hold down if desired. The spawns would essentially cycle around the map the entire game because most players were constantly on the move.
I really liked the open maps with multiple paths and levels in COD2. COD2 had a lot of them. Most of the British maps in Africa, some of the Russian maps and US maps. Their structures were often close enough or literally linked that players could move about on multiple levels, offering concealment and cover, lending to stealth, superior positioning and often unpredictable encounters. COD2's maps are a lot closer in design and "verticality" to MW2's maps than COD4's maps. Comparisons like Matmata and Toujane to Favela and Karachi. Caen and Railyard to Skidrow and Sub Base.
Their complexity and multi level structures heavily cut down on the grenade spam as it was far less likely to score blind grenade kills. It was enjoyable having a 32 player server (aside from the extra grenade spam) in some COD2 maps, it was still possible to be mobile. COD4 maps were definitely meant for no more than 16, and even then they felt crowded.
And regarding Killstreaks, COD2 maps with their many intact buildings are far more suited to defend players against powerful killstreaks we have today than the maps of COD4 - they only had an inaccurate airstrike and a tunnel-visioned helicopter in mind.
I'd be elated if it was stated the maps would be more like COD2 (because then it'd be a lot like MW2's maps).
But he said COD4. The maps were my least favorite thing about COD4, second to the frag grenade spam.

Re: MW 3 or BF 3?
Did someone strike a nerve there Den?
Though I do agree with Den for the most part. Because while it was always more challenging to predict how the enemy was going to move, it was more fun in the long run.
Why cant the game just have a mix of both types. You know, variety is the spice of life and all that...

Re: MW 3 or BF 3?
I see what you're saying. To be honest, I really dis-liked COD4's maps. I personally agree with you that COD2 maps were far and above better than recent COD iterations. Perhaps I mis-understood what IW was saying about how they were doing MW3 maps.
I'm not sure if I played with you on COD4 much, but I always complained about the map structure being way too damn linear on far too may maps.
Ambush - Few paths to mid with crossfight main focus point. Feels linear in where you can go.
Block - Again, you have a long layout of buildings on both sides with a main open layout int he middle. Few lanes again.
Bog - Possibly worst map in the game. I mean, not really sure what the hell was the developer thought behind this.
Countdown - Feels like you're running in a circle. No real choke points/lanes/anything makes it feel like an open field.
Crossfire - Another map with a main lane down the middle road and buildings on each side.
Downpour - Could have been better if they somehow widened it to not have the terrible choke point in the middle. Completely ruins the map.
Pipeline - Again, feels like a moshpit between two large buildings.
Shipment - LOL?
Showdown - LOL? I mean, really, what the hell is wrong with this map. It's small as hell. You can either go left, right or middle. It's garbage.
Wetwork - Again, another EXTREMELY linear map with hardly anywhere you can go besides straight.
If this is how MW3 decides to do maps, I personally would be completely pissed off because there are few maps I enjoy in COD4. I enjoy the game, but the maps really put me off.

Re: MW 3 or BF 3?
The great thing about cod 4 and cod 2 is the option of making your own maps. The map I made was fairly simple and it had several routes to the other side of the map. I was working on a non-prefab map where I designed all the buildings and landscape myself but my videocard at the time couldnt properly test it. It just kept crashing.

Re: MW 3 or BF 3?
But if they let you make your own maps they think less people will buy their ridiculously over-priced map packs.
Re: MW 3 or BF 3?
Do you still have that map saved? Would be neat to check it out again. I remember testing it out.z3r07w0 wrote:The great thing about cod 4 and cod 2 is the option of making your own maps. Re: MW 3 or BF 3?
In other (kind of related to map making) news, Planetside 2 will apparently allow players/outfits to make their own bases.
Re: MW 3 or BF 3?
yeah, I can still play that map I made. I posted it on a cod website that is still running.

You know you always buy both anyway z3r0! I need to upgrade my vid card. But I would love to get back into playing more frequently with you guys again. The best online experiences I have are when I first joined PHX and everyone was into COD. Those were good times.
Arch I still play Guild Wars so when you get back I can go through with you. Always better to be with someone else.
Psyched about the tourney see you all there!
Cheers

Re: MW 3 or BF 3?
So Hypothetically, if someone got into the BF3 alpha someone else who had also hypothetically gotten into said alpha could pm that person so they could hypothetically both join the same server to hypothetically kick some ass.....hypothetically
